I might be about to make an embarrassing confession here, but based on the other kids with a shared interest in the Pokemon TCG when I was at school in the late '90s, I don't think I'm alone. When I first got into Pokemon cards along with what felt like everyone else about 25 years ago, I had no idea how to actually play the game. I was only interested in filling my folder with rare and shiny cards. If only something like My First Battle had been around to lend me and my friends a helping hand back then.
Pokemon TCG: My First Battle is a new set of cards designed to be played with the whole family and as a way to introduce younger trainers to the game. There are two sets available now, one with Pikachu and Bulbasaur front and center, and another which replaces them with Charmander and Squirtle. Each set includes two mini decks, each made up of 17 cards, two playmats, a rulebook, a Pokemon coin, damage counters, and prize tokens.

My First Battle is a streamlined version of the TCG which Pokemon describes as "foolproof" (I'll be the judge of that). Designed not only as a fun tabletop game for the whole family, but as an introduction to the wider world of Pokemon trading cards, and it has become a heck of a wide world during its ongoing run. Your kids will share your love of Pokemon cards in no time and will have a leg up on me when I was their age since they'll be able to do more than just admire them.
Pokemon TCG: My First Battle is a set that has been created to help introduce young Pokemon trainers to the TCG. There are two sets available, each of which includes two mini decks and everything else you need to play this streamlined version of the TCG.
The best thing about My First Battle is you don't have to fight off scalpers to get your hands on a set. The Pokemon world has once again been mired by people acting like they've never left the house before when a new line of merch was released last week. A collaboration with Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum kicked off with that merch being made available at the museum itself. That led to the museum's store being mobbed and causing chaos when the merch went on sale.
The Pokemon TCG Classic set has also been hard to find despite its lofty price tag. A recreation of the original Pokemon cards, the set is sold out everywhere right now even though it costs $400. Bear that in mind before you introduce your kids to My First Battle. Pokemon TCG fandom can get pretty expensive.
