A Pokemon fan has created a new food-themed re-design of one of the franchise's classic Pokemon, re-imagining a version of Tangela inspired by ramen. The beloved monster-catching franchise has seen plenty of unique new interpretations of its older Pokemon, breathing new life into many of the original designs from the earliest games. Modern games have added several regional variant Pokemon and «regional fakes» based on classic Pokemon, like Alolan Rattata, Galarian Zigzagoon, and Wiglett. Now, one fan is giving an old-school Grass Pokemon a food-inspired makeover.
Food has been a popular theme for both fan designs and official creations within Pokemon, seeing plenty of delectable new creatures added to the games. Pokemon like Sinistea and Poltchageist, Vanillish, and Tatsugiri have all taken unique spins on different foods as catchable creatures in the games. One of the series' newest Starter Pokemon also boasts a food-themed inspiration, with Fuecoco sparking debate among fans about whether the Fire Pokemon is based on an apple or a chili pepper. Now, one fan is giving a food-themed makeover to Tangela, turning it into a bowl of ramen.
Reddit user JaneHates shared their re-design of Tangela on the Pokemon subreddit, showing off a new look for Tangela inspired by a popular Japanese food. The ramen-themed Tangela features long and stringy ramen noodles in place of its vines with a bowl on top of its head, suggesting the Tangela is a bowl of ramen spilling over. The design boasts several other homages to the iconic Japanese dish, with a fish cake above its eye and two eggs for its feet. The user also shares their typing for the re-imagined Tangela, envisioning it as a Normal/Fairy type.
The Tangela saw plenty of praise from fans, as well as discussion around its proposed typing from the creator. Several fans pointed out that many of Pokemon's food-themed creatures, like the previously mentioned Sinistea and the Milcery evolutionary line, are often slotted into Fairy typing. Some suggested that Pokemon should officially introduce «Food» as a type within the games, given the high quantity of food-themed creatures. A few fans even proposed names for the variant Pokemon, with suggestions like «Tangenoodle» and «Tangeramen.»
The creative re-design for Tangela comes as the iconic franchise recently saw a plethora of major announcements. The «Pokemon Presents» broadcast late last month officially revealed the franchise's next major console release with Pokemon Legends: Z-A debuting in 2025. The Pokemon Company also confirmed a new mobile-focused version of the Pokemon Trading Card Game is in development in Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket.
