Sony is set to launch the PS5 cloud streaming service for PlayStation Plus Premium members before the end of October.
The beta test of the service, which allows PS5 owners to play games without first having to download them, was clearly a success because Sony has announced it's rolling out the service regionally later this month.
Japan will get it first on Oct. 17, Europe is next on Oct. 23, and US gamers gain access on Oct. 30. Those dates are only targets, though, and could therefore slip.
The service will be limited to "supported PS5 digital titles within the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog" and requires an internet connection with a minimum speed of 5Mbps for 720p streaming. However, to stream at 1080p requires a minimum speed of 15Mbps, and 4K streaming requires 38Mbps or ideally faster than that. Sony is promising 60fps output, 3D audio, and HDR support for streamed games.
The games Sony has confirmed will be playable include Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, Mortal Kombat 11, and Saints Row IV. There will also be game trials available for Hogwarts Legacy, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and The Calisto Protocol. Other titles confirmed as streamable include Resident Evil 4, Dead Island 2, Genshin Impact, Fall Guys, and Fortnite.
The ability to stream games arrives just ahead of the launch of the new, smaller PS5 console. Sony confirmed yesterday that even though the redesigned console is 30% smaller, you can still stick up to an 8TB SSD inside. However, if you're excited about streaming games to your PS5, you probably don't need to install additional local storage.
