Cryptic Studios, the makers of MMOs including Star Trek Online and Dungeons & Dragons MMORPG Neverwinter, have confirmed a number of layoffs due to the ongoing “comprehensive restructuring” of megacorp owner Embracer Group. The “personnel changes” at Cryptic make them the latest Embracer-owned developer to suffer job losses in what continues to be an unrelenting year for thousands of those working in video games.
Paradox Interactive and Harebrained Schemes Part Ways After The Lamplighters League Reportedly Disappoints

With the recently-released The Lamplighters League and the Tower at the End of the World reportedly a financial disappointment for Paradox interactive, the company and developer Harebrained Schemes have announced they will part ways as of January 1st.
In a press release about the decision, the separation is described as mutual, something that will best serve each company in their particular focus and creative priorities. Paradox Interactive will retain ownership of the The Lamplighter’s League, Battletech, and other games created by Harebrained Schemes, and the studio to explore new opportunities in publishing, creative development, and investment.
Paradox Interactive Chief Operating Officer Charlotta Nilsson says that “We and HBS’ leadership have been discussing what would happen after the release of The Lamplighters League, but a new project or sequel in the same genre was not in line with our portfolio plans. Hence, we believe that a separation would be the best way forward”.
Harebrained Schemes will support The Lamplighter’s League through the end of the year. Heading into 2024, they're looking for new partnerships and funding to move forward. Over the summer, there were reportedly heavy layoffs at the studio, and it seems that they’re in a starting anew sort of phase. Yet, they’re remaining optimistic. HBS operations manager Brian Poel, in the announcement, says, “Our studio mission remains the same: to make games that challenge your mind and touch your heart”.
