A recent interview with voice actor Yuri Lowenthal, who plays Peter Parker in , revealed that the first game in the series was almost missing a key death. The beloved superhero franchise just received its third entry this week, continuing the story of dual protagonists Peter and Miles Morales. The newest game is the most expansive yet, taking players all over Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens as they go head-to-head with villains like Kraven and Venom.

Yuri Lowenthal: So the death of Aunt May, that was something that we shot and then we were told, “You know what, we're not allowed to do that, we're going to have to cut that.” And then we somehow earned it back, so it came back. So you never know what changes are going to stick and which ones aren't. And you always start off with these grand designs — we're going to do all this and all that, and then you realize you've only got enough time and money for some of it. But this game still seems so epic to me that if there's anything that they cut from when we were originally talking about it, I don't even think I can remember it at this point.

Aunt May's death is undoubtedly one of the most pivotal and impactful scene in, as well an important part of the general canon for the hero that fans have become familiar with. While Insomniac's games are known for giving their own spin on this well-trodden tales, the survival of Aunt May would've taken away a big emotional moment for players. Funnily enough, Aunt May originally wasn't in at all due to difficulties rendering elderly animations, which would've been an incredibly noticeable absence.
It was certainly important for Aunt May to be a part of Peter's story in the game in any capacity, as she's a core character that help's flesh out Peter Parker's emotional backstory and motivation. However, if she'd appeared but survived, it could be argued her presence wouldn't have been used to its full potential. Though it was a heart-wrenching moment for players, the overall narrative of was ultimately made stronger by her tragic passing.
