NVIDIA's consumer & gaming GPUs have reportedly started to see a drastic reduction in global supply, potentially creating a shortage in markets.
Reports of NVIDIA and its GPUs getting "hard to find" in marketplaces have been ongoing for some time now. While the global supply saw steadiness within the 2022-2023 period, things might change going ahead, as industry sources cite that global volumes have dropped significantly.
Citing Taiwanese industry sources, MyDrivers reports that NVIDIA's consumer GPUs have started to see lower supply in markets going into Q4 2023. The report doesn't specify what type of SKUs are short in markets, but we believe the complete RTX 40 series has seen a stock reduction in recent times, and its effects are evident in Chinese markets. Marketplaces such as JD.com have already seen a hike in NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace pricing and the release of the "cut-down GeForce RTX 4090D has fueled the fire since consumers are hurrying the buy up the GPU to avoid getting left out. ,
However, the situation isn't confined to a regional level only, since it is speculated that markets such as the United States and Europe have reported a drop in NVIDIA's GPU stock, and who knows, we might see a price hike if the situation continues like this. Team Green's flagship Ada GPU, the GeForce RTX 4090 isn't available at marketplaces such as Amazon and Best Buy, and it is retailing well above the $1599 US MSRP on eBay as well. The situation is similar with other SKUs within the lineup as well.
While there isn't an exact reason behind the supply issue, it is reported that Team Green is so busy capitalizing on AI accelerators designed for its data center segment that it may have cut down the production of consumer GPUs, but this is just a rumor for now.
NVIDIA is known to go where the markets hold potential, and I mean they are right to do so, since in the end, a profitable business is what matters right? Well, since AI GPUs designed for computing are much more profitable than gaming ones, it does seem "professional" of NVIDIA to prioritize their supply. It is still early to say anything conclusive, but we hope not to see the crypto-currency shortage era once again, especially at this time when the PC market is once again on the path to recovery after being slow for several years.
