A massive new update for No Man's Sky has been released just days after it was first teased, bringing various new features that many in the game's community have been hoping to see introduced to the procedurally generated space exploration game since it was released in 2016. Called the Orbital update, version 4.6 is the second update that No Man's Sky has received so far this year, with even more set to come in 2024.
The update was initially teased in a series of tweets from No Man's Sky creator Sean Murray consisting of shooting star emojis, sparking plenty of speculation from fans as to what the update might bring. With the Orbital update releasing just days after this tease, however, No Man's Sky's second content drop of the year mostly just came out of the blue. Despite some fans expecting little more than another new community expedition event from the update, it actually focuses on delivering a big promised feature to the game, while also bringing in a couple of surprises.
The flagship content introduced with No Man's Sky's Orbital update features completely overhauled space stations, which now boast incredible new exterior appearances as well as reimagined interior spaces. These updated station interiors offer enhanced utilities as well, with improvements to guilds and merchants allowing players to make donations to guilds in exchange for reputation and enjoy product discounts when purchasing from races that they have good relations with. Despite all of this, perhaps the single biggest feature the Orbital update introduces is the ability to custom-build starships from scratch using a special terminal at space stations.
This essentially makes it possible for players to create any non-exclusive starship that can generate in No Man's Sky, though players will first need to salvage parts from starships that have crashed on planets. This means that players will no longer have to stumble across their ideal starship by chance, though the spirit of exploration that the game encourages is exactly the reason many fans previously believed that starship customization would never officially be added to the game.
While most of No Man's Sky's upcoming features are usually kept under wraps, these overhauled space stations were actually first revealed as part of a teaser trailer for the game that was shown at The Game Awards last year. The trailer celebrated seven years since the game's release and the various updates that No Man's Sky has received throughout this time, and thankfully, it seems like the game's continued development isn't coming to an end any time soon.

Starships are supposed to be one of the few things in No Man's Sky that players can't trade with one another, but an incredible interaction between players online seems to confirm that two random members of the community have somehow swapped starships unintentionally thanks to a bizarre glitch in the game. Many fans of No Man's Sky have shared examples of some odd bugs in the past, and many more have even utilized such faults in the game's code to their advantage in base building through a process known as «glitch building.»

No Man's Sky has become synonymous with ambitious developer overreach, a cautionary tale of what can happen when publishers do nothing to reign in out-of-control hype. When the game was released in 2016 and failed to meet sky-high expectations set in no small part by Hello Games director Sean Murray himself, fan backlash was the stuff of legends. But ever since, the developer has set about making amends.
No Man's Sky remains one of the greatest comeback stories in the industry, a shaky launch entirely reversed by nearly a decade of meaningful and entirely free support. More than a dozen expansions later, however, and despite a new game on the way, game director Sean Murray is still yearning to improve the game's reputation.
No Man's Sky is barely recognizable from the game that launched all the way back in 2016. That's down to the passionate developers at Hello Games consistently updating the title with new features, quality of life improvements, and massive free expansions, turning one of the worst games of 2016 into arguably the greatest redemption story the games industry has ever seen, outside of maybe Cyberpunk 2077.
