Nintendo has revealed updated sales numbers for the 10 best-selling Switch games of all time. The Nintendo Switch has been a massive sales success for Nintendo, with the home console/handheld hybrid passing 141 million units sold worldwide. With the Nintendo Switch having such a massive fanbase, it's no surprise that the console is home to some incredibly successful Nintendo software as well.
The list of the 10 best-selling Nintendo Switch games is completely dominated by Nintendo-published titles. The Switch has built an impressive lineup of exclusive games, with even more on the horizon. Even so, it's worth pointing out that the best-selling Switch game of all time, and one that is almost certainly never going to be dethroned, is technically an enhanced port of a Wii U title.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still the best-selling Switch game, with 61.97 million units sold so far. It's followed by Animal Crossing: New Horizons at 45.36 million units, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at 34.22 million, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at 31.85 million, Super Mario Odyssey at 27.96 million, Pokemon Sword and Shield at 26.27 million, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet at 24.92 million, Super Mario Party at 20.66 million, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom at 20.61 million, and finally, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe at 17.45 million units sold as of May 2024.
Notably, every game on this list is in the exact same position they were in when Nintendo last revealed the best-selling Switch games. The only difference is how many units each game has sold. Future financial reports from Nintendo will likely shake things up a bit. It's entirely possible Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will eventually overtake Pokemon Sword and Shield, and it seems highly likely that Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will eventually take Super Mario Party's spot.
What remains unclear is if any new game will ever crack the top 10. As it stands, Nintendo is starting to wind down its work on the Switch, having finally publicly acknowledged that the Switch 2 is in the works. There are still upcoming Switch exclusive games yet to be released, but it's unlikely that they will be popular enough to break the top 10. Time will tell, but these 10 games could very well be the definitive list of the 10 best-selling Switch exclusives.

Launching with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the platform has amassed a wide selection of triple-A and indie titles. The cartridge used in the event went on to become a prized collectors’ item, but now, players will get a chance to buy a physical item directly inspired by it.

But once you’ve burned through your first 40 hours, New Horizons is best played in short bursts. While mods can add more variety, sometimes you need a fresh take to really scratch that itch. None of the following suggestions are identical to New Horizons, but they all offer a unique combination of crafting, exploring, and chatting with your NPC neighbors that New Horizons fans are bound to enjoy.
Nintendo turned things around with the Switch. Before its launch, the Wii U was languishing well in third place in the console wars and, after considerable pressure, the company was making its first tentative steps into mobile gaming with Miitomo and Super Mario Run. Fast-forward to today and Nintendo continues to sell millions of Switch units each year, even with the console being nearly eight years old. This is likely due in part to the Switch’s unique hybrid format and an ever-growing game library with uncharacteristically strong third-party support. “Cozy games” are a huge phenomenon right now, because at the end of the day, who doesn’t like being cozy? While some games focus on visceral combat or thrilling narratives, cozy games often focus on creating a comfortable or fulfilling place for players to hang out. Instead of swinging a sword or slaying foes, players can focus on creating the perfect flower bed, or befriending the kind golem next door.

If you only tend to follow the biggest video game releases, it may seem like the Nintendo Switch is currently in a game drought. The system has only gotten a handful of niche releases last year, like Endless Ocean: Luminous, that haven’t been Zelda-level hits. Zoom out a bit, though, and you’ll find that Nintendo’s aging system is still thriving. That’s thanks to vibrant indie and third-party scenes that are keeping the platform engaging.
