Nintendo has revealed that fans can expect an announcement about the upcoming Switch successor, or Switch 2 as it has come to be known, sometime before the end of the current fiscal year. Rumors about the next iteration of the Nintendo Switch have been swirling for the past couple of years, which is understandable considering that the company’s unique hybrid console originally launched in 2017. Even upon its release, the Switch was considered to be one generation behind the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and many gamers have been waiting for Nintendo to release hardware that could compete graphically and technically with ninth-generation consoles.
Increasingly in recent months, a number of Switch 2 leaks have begun cropping up online, and a Japanese retailer even prematurely listed the rumored console on its website in January 2024. According to the leaks, the updated Switch console is expected to be backward compatible with Switch 1 game cartridges and current Joy-Con and Pro controllers. The Switch 2 Joy-Con, for their part, are rumored to be bigger than the current iteration, and each will feature a new button and attach to the console via a magnet rather than slotting in. Perhaps most notably, the Switch 2 leaks maintain that the new console will feature a larger screen that displays up to 1080p.
On May 6, Nintendo President Furukawa confirmed that an announcement about the upcoming Switch successor will be made before the end of this current fiscal year. Nintendo’s fiscal year concludes on March 31, 2025, so nearly a year from now, which may not be that encouraging for eager gamers. In order to quell the anticipation that this confirmation will inevitably cause, Furukawa warned fans that there will be no mention of the Switch successor during the upcoming June Nintendo Direct presentation.
This 2025 date actually jives with previous speculation by analysts and leakers that March 2025 could be a possible release window for the Switch 2. This rumor has been corroborated by known leakers and insiders who have proven reliable in the past, with some insisting that the March window is “firm.” Previously, the Switch successor was reportedly planned to release in the second half of 2024, but that date was apparently internally delayed in order to ensure there would be enough supply to meet the anticipated demand.
Furukawa specifically stating that there will be no Switch 2 announcement during the upcoming Nintendo Direct does cast another rumor into doubt, though. In February, after the rumored console delay, Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe stated that Nintendo would reveal its next console in June 2024. However, even if the Nintendo Direct is reserved for revealing software slated

Nintendo recently revealed its updated sales numbers for the Switch console, not too long after the company acknowledged its eventual follow-up. Ever since hitting the market in early 2017, the Nintendo Switch has been a global sales juggernaut, bolstered by chart-topping exclusives like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and last year’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie has also helped sell more Nintendo Switch consoles in countries like Mexico and South America after landing in theaters in 2023.
Gamers know that Nintendo Switch deals almost always get sold out quickly, so you should be quick in taking advantage of Walmart’s offer for the Nintendo Switch OLED.
