A new cooperative 3D platformer based on The Smurfs media franchise will come to Sony's PS4 and PS5 consoles in 2024. A number of games based on the beloved property have been released in recent years.
Belgian artist Pierre «Peyo» Culliford's The Smurfs focuses on the eponymous race of small, blue, humanoid creatures who live in mushroom-shaped houses in the forest. While the series started out as a comic in Culliford's home country, it has since expanded to other forms of media, such as TV, movies, and even video games. The next game entry in the franchise has just been announced, and it will be published by French company Microids.
Ocellus Services, a video game developer also based in France, has just released the first trailer for The Smurfs: Dreams, its upcoming 3D cooperative platformer for the PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S machines that will launch in 2024. Following the reveal, some gamers said that The Smurfs — Dreams was similar to Sackboy: A Big Adventure, which has been considered to be one of the best PS4 and PS5 games with multiplayer.
The Smurfs: Dreams will focus on the series' iconic blue heroes as they try to put an end to a new evil scheme devised by the franchise's main antagonist, Gargamel. The reoccurring villain was featured in the two live-action The Smurfs films produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation. Since appearing in those, Gargamel has been recognized as one of the strongest evil wizards in movies, joining the likes of Saruman from Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, as well as the Warcraft movie adaptation’s Medivh.
Several games based on The Smurfs IP have been released over the years, including Eden Games' The Smurfs Kart for the PC, Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S systems. The title, which dropped in 2022, is a beginner-friendly kart racer that features tracks and characters taken from The Smurfs' universe, and it was among Amazon Luna's free games for Prime subscribers in April 2024.
Ocellus Services worked with Supercell, Square Enix, and Metacore prior to announcing its new The Smurfs game. The studio created assets for titles such as Merge Mansion, Arena Battle Champions, and Clash Royale, the latter of which is often lauded as being one of the best strategy games on mobile devices. Microids, meanwhile, has handled a long list of releases, including The Smurfs — Mission Vileaf, a platformer that launched in 2021.
The Smurfs: Mission Vileaf is an adventure game that features an easy-to-grasp gameplay that appeals to fans of the beloved Smurfs characters as well as fans of 3D platformers. The game's intuitive design ensures an enjoyable experience for both new and advanced players.
