Netflix is reportedly interested in adding a Grand Theft Auto game to its subscription service.
That’s according to a Wall Street Journal report, which claims the streaming giant wants to take a page out of its Hollywood playbook by licensing major third-party properties to complement its burgeoning first-party catalogue.
According to unnamed sources, over the next few months Netflix subscribers will be able to play mobile games based on its hit properties including Squid Game and Wednesday, while the company is also exploring games based on Extraction, Black Mirror and its Sherlock Holmes series.
However, even as its first-party line-up grows, Netflix will continue to offer popular third-party games like Bloons TD 6 and Classic Solitaire, and it has reportedly discussed releasing a game within the Grand Theft Auto series through a licensing deal with Rockstar owner Take-Two.
Netflix began offering subscribers access to a library of mobile games through the Android and iOS versions of its app in late 2021. However, it’s also expanding into higher-end games that can be streamed from TVs or PCs.
It launched a cloud gaming service in limited beta form in August. It supports two games, the first-party title Oxenfree from Night School Studio, and Molehew’s gem-mining arcade game Mining Adventure.
Players use their smartphone as a controller to play games on TV, while members can play using a keyboard and mouse on PC and Mac.
Netflix is also working on an original, multiplatform, triple-A game at a recently established studio in California, which is led by Overwatch executive producer Chacko Sonny.
The team includes the studio’s creative director Joseph Staten, the Halo veteran who left Microsoft in March, and art director Raf Grassetti, who previously held the same position at God of War developer Santa Monica Studio.
Digital Eclipse and Nightdive Studios are joining the Atari family.
Atari has entered into an agreement to acquire Digital Eclipse, with the deal expected to be completed in the coming days.
Atari has agreed to buy classic video game maker Digital Eclipse for up to $20 million in cash and stock.

The torturous wait for an official announcement of Grand Theft Auto 6, and it’s anyone’s guess just how much longer it’ll drag on, and with Rockstar seemingly being in no mood to share details on the long-awaited open world title just yet, fans are continuing to look at alternative sources that might give an indication of what to expect from the game.
Competition is intensifying in China's automated-driving scene with the arrival of Jiyue 01, the first electric vehicle from a joint venture between Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. and Chinese search and tech giant Baidu Inc.
Upon booting up Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, I did what any self-respecting New Yorker would do: I beelined it toward my favorite part of the city as soon as possible, to see how Insomniac Games had recreated the locale. In my case, this meant veering toward South Brooklyn, even as Sandman was wreaking havoc on the infrastructure of Manhattan’s Financial District. However, as I swung beneath the gothic arches of Brooklyn Bridge, the better to glimpse the steel girders and stevedore cranes of Red Hook from a distance, the vista confirmed what I had feared deep down: My favorite neighborhood wasn’t even there.
Despite confirming its development, Rockstar Games still hasn’t officially showcased the next Grand Theft Auto (which suffered a massive leak last year). It was recently rated by the Australian Classification Board, which could mean an announcement is forthcoming. For now, French publication Rockstar Magazine has some new details on graphical improvements in the sequel.
Bryan Intihar, creative director of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 took to X just the other day to sing the praises of game videographer Much118, whose recent video managed to mimic the Into the Spiderverse movie's Leap Of Faith scene almost perfectly.
It’s the final boss fight and everyone at the table is crying — but not because anyone has died. It’s because of how performer Sea Thomas is handling a game-changing moment between their character, a half-drow aasimar bloodhunter named Øka Hyen, and the season’s big bad. “Hitsagutan, after all of this is over, my mother is making soup,” they say. “I really think you would love it. Shank and radish stew. I’ll take the meat out of my bowl and put it in yours.” This is their attempt to leverage their personal relationship with the big bad to talk her down, rather than launching an attack or presuming violence to be the only form of resolution. And it’s just one of dozens of moments from Transplanar RPG that set it apart from other actual-play shows.
In case you’ve somehow missed it, GamesBeat is holding its Next event early next week in San Francisco. As always, I’ll be there, probably in a costume of some kind, to participate. GTA 6 leak: Hardcore gamers around the world have been patiently waiting for any news about Grand Theft Auto 6 or GTA 6. It is the rumoured sequel to 2013's GTA 5 which has become the second best-selling video game of all time, raising the bar of open-world gameplay. If 2018's Red Dead Redemption 2, which had a massive open world full of life, is anything to go by, then the next big GTA game could be the one that pushes the boundaries of gaming.
