As the studio behind Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Dread, Spanish developer MercurySteam has proven itself capable of meeting the high expectations that go hand-in-hand with a new mainline 2D Metroid game. With both games – Dread in particular – also having both critically and commercially successful, it’s no surprise that there’s already been plenty of speculation regarding whether the studio will be working with Nintendo on another 2D Metroid game in the future.
MercurySteam itself is, as you might imagine, unwilling to say much on the topic. Speaking recently with Gamereactor, when asked if the studio had a follow-up to Metrid Dread in the works, MercurySteam CEO Enric Álvarez was reluctant to say much one way or another.
“Well, about the projects we are doing today, there is nothing I can say,” he said. “So a simple ‘no comment’ will suffice.”
He did, however, note that José Luis, who directed both of MercurySteam’s Metroid games, is still part of the team at the studio.
“The only thing I can say is that José Luis is still in the studio. Period,” Álvarez said.
Metroid Dread has sold over 2.9 million units, and received near-universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike upon its launch in 2021. Interestingly, Metroid series producer Yoshio Sakamoto has also said on multiple occasions that though Dread was the conclusion to the series’ original 2D era arc, it is not the last 2D Metroid instalment.
In our review of Metroid Dread, we awarded it a score of 10/10, saying, “Metroid Dread is a superlative return to one of the medium’s stalwart franchises, and an incredible triumph of design.” Read the full review through here.
MercurySteam is currently also working on a dark fantasy third person action RPG, which will be co-published by 505 Games.

When a video game developer does well on a title, the natural reward is to give them more to do. That goes double when they help revitalize a franchise that had been dormant for some time. In the case of MercurySteam, they have proven their worth to Nintendo twice over as they were able to make two hit games featuring Samus Aran. The first was a full-on remake of her second title for the Nintendo 3DS. Then, they cranked everything up to eleven with the creation of Metroid Dread, a game that was so good it got Game of the Year nominations.

If you’ve played Diablo 4 for an extended period of time, you may have run into the Butcher, a super powerful enemy who seemingly pops up at random to ruin your dungeon crawling.
We have an exciting new rumor about the long awaited Nintendo sequel, Metroid Prime 4.
It’s been over four and a half years since Nintendo announced that Metroid Prime 4’s development had been rebooted, with Retro Studios taking over the project, and in the time since then, we’ve heard absolutely nothing about the game. With significant time having passed with next to no updates on the game and with leaks claiming that Nintendo is preparing to launch a new console in the second half of 2024, questions about what Metroid Prime 4’s status is, when it’s going to launch, and if it will still be a Switch game have been asked quite often in recent weeks and months.
When the Nintendo Switch came out in 2017, many considered it the “swan song” of The Big N. If you will, this was to be their “Dreamcast moment,” where they would make one last console and then go off into the sunset and become a software company. But that didn’t happen, and it was pretty clear early on that they were going all in on this system to stay relevant. They had one of the best gaming years ever in 2017 with their lineup and promised more for the future, including Metroid Prime 4, which we’re still waiting for.
It’s a pretty big week for Larian Studios, with Baldur’s Gate 3 finally exiting early access and being available for PC. The studio prides itself on its role-playing games, as evidenced by theDivinity: Original Sin series and CEO Swen Vincke isn’t looking to sell out anytime soon.
Developing games for the Xbox Series S was always known to be troublesome due to the console's technical limitations and Microsoft requiring feature parity with the Xbox Series X, but it seems like the less powerful console is more of a problem than most thought, judging from some recent comments.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor publisher Electronic Arts has announced that Respawn is working on a port for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One during an earnings call that took place earlier today. The game launched back in April earlier this year exclusive to the PS5 and Xbox Series X as Respawn wanted to make the title a "true new-gen experience", but it now looks like the developer is making a port for those that don't own current-gen hardware just yet.
