The Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 version of Venom is crawling into the comics in this year’s Venomverse Reborn event, just a few months after menacing gamers on the PlayStation 5. Even before Spider-Man 2 launched back in October, Venom’s presence in the Insomniac universe was strongly felt and hinted at. In the Marvel’s Spider-Man post-credits scene, it is revealed that Norman Osborn has been keeping his terminally ill son Harry suspended in a tank in his penthouse, with an all-too-familiar-looking black substance floating alongside him. Come Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Norman orders Harry to be released, despite the protests of Dr. Curtis Conners.
This sets the stage for Harry’s arrival in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, where he seems to be cured of his illness thanks to the Symbiote. Things take a dark turn when the Symbiote is transferred to Peter Parker, darkening the hero’s personality and causing Harry’s sickness to return with a vengeance. By the time Harry is reunited with his life-sustaining Symbiote, the combination of Peter’s treatment of him while under its influence and his growing desperation to be cured of his disease causes the creature to take over Harry completely, transforming him into the monstrous Venom and setting him on a mission to infect the world with an army of Symbiotes.
As announced by Marvel last week, Spider-Man 2’s Venom will make his comic book debut in the upcoming Venomverse Reborn event — which will feature anthology stories of different incarnations of Venom from Marvel’s multiverse across four issues. Venomverse Reborn #1 will hit stores on June 19 and features a back-up story by Marvel’s Spider-Man writer Christos Gage that sees the Spider-Man 2 Venom battle the wicked Symbiote god Krull.
This won’t be the first time that a character from Insomniac’s Spider-Man gaming universe has made the jump to the printed page, as Peter Parker himself appeared in 2018’s Spider-Geddon crossover event — which was also penned by Christos Gage and premiered just a month after the first Spider-Man game swung onto the PlayStation 4. Outside of the multiverse, there have been three comic book mini-series tie-ins set in the Marvel’s Spider-Man timeline, with one even highlighting the game-exclusive Velocity Suit that is getting its own Funko Pop this year.
Now it is the Insomniac universe Venom’s turn to make the transition from game to comic in this summer’s Venomverse Reborn event. While Spider-Man 2’s take on Venom divided some fans due to his altered backstory and different identity, it will be interesting to see him battle Krull in the pages of June 19’s Venomverse Reborn #1, which comes right on the heels of reports that the Lethal Protector is set to star in his own Insomniac-developed game
