Come on, it’s hard not to be excited about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Even if you’re gaming on the Xbox Series X/S console, you might be bummed not to enjoy this game. Spider-Man 2 has a lot to live up to. The first game was one of the most entertaining PS4 titles and gave players the full experience of being Spider-Man, swinging around New York city to their hearts’ content. Could the sequel offer the same joy, beauty and an equally interesting story while delivering on the dual-protagonist concept? Yes, yes it can — though Insomniac skimped on a couple of areas they shouldn’t have.

For my money, web-swinging around New York City in Marvel’s Spider-Man is perhaps the singular best game mechanic I’ve come across in the last decade or so. It feels so incredibly right, and almost everything else in that game is built off it. I never really wanted to use fast-travel features, because swinging around was much more fun, and finding hidden missions and helping citizens in trouble as you traverse NYC is almost as rewarding as following the game’s main story. Of course, a great mechanic isn’t enough to make a great game, but Spider-Man is one of the most successful open-world style games I can think of, because it felt packed without being overwhelming.

is electric, telling a breakneck story of two protagonists and everyone in their immediate circle with continually escalating, incredibly crisp gameplay. Right from the outset, feels as though it’s taken a significant step above its 2018 and 2020 predecessors. A large and varied cast of characters is impressively juggled while players are set loose as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. City-wide spectacle is constantly juxtaposed with intimate, character-driven moments, all underpinned by the truly unsettling emergence of the alien symbiote hoping to reach the height of its potential as Venom.
