Marvel's Spider-Man 2 accessibility features include support for PS5 Access controller

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is nearly here. Fans are eager to dive into this game, and we will soon see its release this Friday. However, if you’re watching everything released regarding the game, you might have noticed some online debates regarding fast travel. Now, the PlayStation 5 is a powerhouse of a console, so we’re still seeing some impressive features get highlighted simply due to the power of the PS5. One of the features that developers have continued to credit is the SSD. It’s allowed the game to load incredibly quickly, and that might have some wondering if there’s any trickery happening behind the scenes. 

With each console generation that comes out, the big question that players ask is, “How much are we actually getting improvements from one generation to the next?” That’s a fair question to ask, as each new console is hyped up to infinity to try and get people to buy it. To be fair, with Sony consoles, the graphics and processing power improvements have always been in large leaps, not small steps. That’s how they’ve made certain astounding titles that look and play great. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the one that might just show you how incredible the PS5 is as a hardware device.

What makes a good Spider-Man story? Aside from capturing the mythology of the quippy, affable, web-swinging hero, it also must present great adversity for him, and not just when he's wearing the mask. It cannot be a Spider-Man story without Peter Parker. Unlike other superheroes who can wear a cowl and leave their identity behind, the two are inseparable. Spider-Man swings into a fight, but it's Peter who takes the punch. It must also ground Spider-Man in the fragility of human experience. The wall-crawler is strong, but he must learn that we all break. A great Spider-Man story must also deal with personal tragedy. No matter how many times Spider-Man wins the day, it's his loss that defines him. Marvel's Spider-Man, Insomniac Games' first attempt at telling such a story, succeeded on most, if not all, of these parameters. Aside from being incredibly fun to play — with polished web-swinging, an incredibly detailed New York City to explore, and butter-smooth, flowing combat — the first game understood the essence of a Spider-Man story, serving one of the best narratives for the hero perhaps seen across all forms of media.

For my money, web-swinging around New York City in Marvel’s Spider-Man is perhaps the singular best game mechanic I’ve come across in the last decade or so. It feels so incredibly right, and almost everything else in that game is built off it. I never really wanted to use fast-travel features, because swinging around was much more fun, and finding hidden missions and helping citizens in trouble as you traverse NYC is almost as rewarding as following the game’s main story. Of course, a great mechanic isn’t enough to make a great game, but Spider-Man is one of the most successful open-world style games I can think of, because it felt packed without being overwhelming.

PlayStation 5 owners have a brand new exclusive coming their way in a few short days. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 might already be on your radar; if that’s the case, you might be keen to see reviews. Fortunately, reviews have been permitted to be uploaded ahead of time, and today, we’re looking at some of the reviews showing up. Currently, the game has quite a bit of a warm reception from media outlets that were given a chance to check it out before its launch. Looking at Metacritic, you can see the game currently sits at a score of 91.

Right from the outset, feels as though it’s taken a significant step above its 2018 and 2020 predecessors. A large and varied cast of characters is impressively juggled while players are set loose as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. City-wide spectacle is constantly juxtaposed with intimate, character-driven moments, all underpinned by the truly unsettling emergence of the alien symbiote hoping to reach the height of its potential as Venom.

Spider-Man 2 is one of the most confident sequels we’ve played in years. Not only does it address, often mock, and then resolve the issues of the first game, but it also introduces new mechanics to improve the best parts of the original.

The first Spider-Man game from Insomniac was proof of just how fun it could be to play as the web-slinger. It nailed the feeling of momentum and grace inherent in the character and fused it with a solid — if at times formulaic — open-world action game. Two years later, the studio kept things going with a smaller, tighter spinoff focused on Miles Morales. Now comes the inevitable full sequel, which not only has a two in the name but also two spider-men to play as.

PlayStation has released a Spider-Man 2 launch trailer, ahead of reviews going live on Monday and the much-anticipated sequel’s release on October 20.
