A gamer scored an amazing deal on eight Nintendo 64 cartridges via their local Facebook Marketplace and shared pictures and details of the games they purchased for $40. The N64 fan said that of the games they got, onlyPokemon Snap, Pokemon Stadium, and Super Smash Bros. were duplicate cartridges, which left them with five new titles for their collection.
Originally released in 1996, the N64 was Nintendo's third home console. Though it competed with the PlayStation and the Sega Saturn, which both used a CD-ROM format for their games, the N64 stuck to using cartridges during its shelf life. In addition to the cartridges, the N64's unique controller allowed players to use accessories such as a Rumble Pak for haptic feedback, or a Transfer Pak to connect with specific Game Boy games such as Pokemon Red and Blue. Throughout the N64's life, the console was home to hit titles each year of its availability, and titles such as Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask remain among the most popular entries in their respective series.
While the N64 has been discontinued for over two decades, its games still fetch quite a price on different marketplaces. However, a Reddit user named JohnnyPhantom shared on the r/n64 subreddit that not all N64 games need to be too pricey. In two pictures, JohnnyPhantom shared that they bought GoldenEye 007, Mario Kart 64, Misson: Impossible, Super Mario 64, Super Smash Bros., Rampage World Tour, Pokemon Stadium, and Pokemon Snap for just $40. JohnnyPhantom said the original Facebook Marketplace listing had the bundle at $50, so they saved $10. While each game was a loose cartridge, JohnnyPhantom clarified that, aside from some cleaning, each cartridge appeared legitimate. However, they said that Super Smash Bros., Pokemon Stadium, and Pokemon Snap were duplicates that looked in better shape than previous copies.
According to PriceCharting.com at the time of writing, the price of the loose Mario Kart 64 cartridge alone was worth $47.18, which added even more value to JohnnyPhantom's purchase. Adding up each of PriceCharting's loose cartridge listings would put JohnnyPhantom's haul at over $200, with Mario Kart 64 being the most valuable despite not being one of the rarest N64 games.
On the r/N64 subreddit, other users complimented JohnnyPhantom on their bargain hunt, and others shared stories of N64 games from their childhood. While N64 titles continue to be listed on the Nintendo Switch Online service, which ones will appear next remains to be seen.
