The second closed beta test for Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link has revealed a brand new character called Nept, and fans already have a few theories about who he could be.
It may have been a very dry couple of months for Kingdom Hearts news (not counting several rumours about a movie, because I just can't deal with that being a reality), but things are finally starting to pick up thanks to Missing Link. Just a few days ago, a second closed beta test started and, while many thought it would just be the same as the first, it actually introduces a ton of new features and story threads.
The most exciting thing to come from the second closed beta is a brand-new character called Nept, who is the Operations Master of the Baroque Society that our protagonist ends up joining after meeting Remus, a Keyblade wielder from the first beta. Nept has already proven to be a fan favourite thanks to his joking, sleepy demeanour, but he's also kickstarted a new round of theory-crafting.
The first and most common theory that I've seen floating around social media since the beta began is that Nept is somehow related to Aqua from Birth by Sleep and could be her ancestor. The obvious reasoning for that is that Nept has bright blue hair just like Aqua does (and his eyes are strikingly similar to hers in one scene), but it goes a little deeper than that.
As pointed out by Twitter user Bio_Roxas, the name Nept appears to be short for Neptune, who is the Roman God of the Sea. Considering Kingdom Hearts has previously placed a lot of importance on the meaning behind names (Sora being sky, Kairi meaning water, and Riku meaning land, for example), Nept being named after water like Aqua is can't be a coincidence, right?
Kingdom Hearts fans have also pointed out that Remus could be Lea's ancestor due to his red hair and laidback personality. Of course, these characters could just have the same hair colour, but it's more fun to think of it like this.
Nept being related to Aqua seems like a no-brainer considering all of the thematic similarities, but there's an even wilder theory that had my Kingdom Hearts brain churning - Nept could be the Master of Masters. Twitter user aitaikimochi pointed out that Nept is called "Master" by both Freya and Remus and that he puts on the same easygoing front that the Master of Masters does to hide a more serious personality.
He also has one of his eyes covered at all times by his hair, which could be a reference to the Gazing Eye Keyblade that the Master of Masters created using his own foreseeing eye. I personally think it's a little bit of a stretch and unlikely that such an important character would be introduced in a mobile ga- wait, what am I saying? Of course, Kingdom Hearts could do
