The original Jurassic Park was something of a cultural marvel 30 years ago and it’s held up quite well in many ways. The logo itself may be one of the greatest logos ever and hasn’t aged a day in that time, while the film’s effects are remarkable in scale, scope and execution. While licensed games aren’t as big a deal today as they were for most major films then, the Jurassic Park games did stand out for many reasons because they were largely pretty good games and also quite diverse i terms of the kinds of gameplay offered up in them. Both the SNES and Genesis got their own completely different games, with the SNES getting an overhead action game with some first-person sections and the Genesis getting a fantastic side-scrolling action game.
Even the NES got its own overhead action game that evoked a bit of the original Legend of Zelda games while the Game Boy got a game as well. The original games were so popular that they even got follow-ups to varying degrees, which is something you never really saw then – let alone now. Today, there are rarely any games made on movies or licensed properties as they’re going on. You’ll see a few like Stranger Things Season 3 get a short release, but nothing day and date with a big film and back then, it was all about getting something out because the game was another piece of key merchandise and if you couldn’t get it out in time for the movie, aim for the home video release.
Limited Run’s Carbon Engine is being used to bring the collection to life it’s quite all-encompassing. You get all of the Jurassic Park-branded games for the NES, SNES, Game Boy and Genesis alongside The Chaos Continues on SNES and Game Boy alongside Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition, a latter-day Genesis exclusive that never really got its due in its time. The collection is available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam today for $29.99 and offers up a lot of gaming goodness for a pretty small sum of money.
Getting seven games with modern enhancements like save states, quality of life improvements and new in-game maps to make navigation easier. Each game has something to offer and seeing collections like this come about with multiple publishers and console makers’ games featured helps chronicle gaming’s history. We really saw these things take off with Disney collections before the TMNT Cowabunga Collection opened that door up even wider and now the Jurassic Park fandom can experience much of the franchise’s early gaming history in one collection.
