Is ‘Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’ canon to the movies?

Grab your fedora, whip, and pistol because Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is plotting a course to consoles soon. After being announced via a small teaser in 2021, we’re now finally starting to put the pieces together on the mystery that is this new title from MachineGames. While many very popular and successful games have been inspired by the Indiana Jones film franchise, including Uncharted and Tomb Raider, Indy himself has yet to star in a true action-adventure game worthy of his legacy. Will this game be the one to remind audiences who the true pioneer of set-piece action and globe-trotting puzzle-solving is? Only time will tell, but we can at least guess based on all the clues we’ve unearthed.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the newly titled next video game starring everyone’s favourite whip-wielding archaeologist, is set in the year 1937. But where does that place it in the grander Indy timeline? Well, we know it’s set in-between the Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, the first and third films in the original trilogy respectively. But it’s a little more complicated than just that, with other films and games coming both before and after Dr Jones’ latest adventure. Let’s take a quick look at his story so far, the artifacts he’s already discovered, and the relationships he’s forged (and broken).

The upcoming video game tosses the intrepid archaeologist into a deadly adventure once more, and that journey looks like it will face him up against foes who are as dastardly as ever. Starting with rival archaeologist René Belloq and the army of Nazis on his side in, villains tend to be memorable parts of stories that are full of set pieces and surprises galore. Indiana always triumphs, of course, but his enemies are often done in by their hubris as much as they are by his wits.

Yesterday we got the big reveal of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Bethesda and MachineGames didn’t hold back, revealing quite a bit of first-person gameplay and other info about the game’s approach and story. That said, there were a few lingering questions after the presentation, such as, who’s playing Indy and what kind of tech is powering the game? Well, we now have answers on both.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, a new whip-cracking adventure coming from Wolfenstein studio MachineGames and avowed Indy fanboy Todd Howard, was revealed on Thursday to be a first-person game. Well, mostly. Players will see through the eyes of Indiana Jones on a globe-trotting story where they’ll explore ancient temples, recover mysterious artifacts, and punch, shoot, and whip Nazis.

Three years after it was first teased by Bethesda Softworks, , developed by Machine Games(makers of the modern series), has had a full reveal at the 2024 Developer_Direct from Xbox, revealing many of the game's major characters. As a game set in the same continuity as the movies, includes a number of returning characters, but also includes some additions that are completely new to the game.

MachineGames revealed the first look at its upcoming title, at Xbox's Developer Direct 2024 showcase. The Xbox Series S/X and PC exclusive title was announced back in January 2021, but the showcase finally gave players their first look at gameplay and provided some insight into the story, and when it takes place on the wider timeline.

Nope, Harrison Ford is sadly not voicing the titular tomb raider in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. 

Following the reveal of Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, developer MachineGames’ decision to go predominantly first-person for the game has become perhaps its biggest talking point.

As promised, Xbox offered the first details on MachineGames' Indiana Jones project during its Developer Direct stream on Thursday. It also confirmed the game's title —Indiana Jones and the Great Circle — and revealed that it's coming to Xbox Series X/S, PC and Xbox Cloud Gaming later this year.

It’s confirmed that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2024, with a day one release straight into Xbox Game Pass.
