Insomniac Games, the developer of the Marvel's Spider-Man series, has issued a statement regarding recent layoffs at the studio. It's no secret that the gaming industry is going through tough times at the moment. Numerous companies, both large and small, have been experiencing cuts, and lots of talented people have lost their jobs this year. Back in January, for example, Riot Games announced layoffs, which continued a worrying trend from last year.
Some fans might have thought, or at least hoped, that a studio like Insomniac Games would be spared from what's currently happening in the industry. The developer recently released a massive hit with Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which earned rave reviews and stellar sales. Unfortunately, even this success wasn't enough to prevent layoffs for the company.
In a tweet sent out from the official Insomniac Games account, the developer responded to the news of layoffs, expressing deep sadness and offering support to the employees who have been affected. The message reiterated that, as a subsidiary of the larger company, Insomniac was being impacted by PlayStation laying off approximately 900 people. The statement also emphasized that the studio was committed to supporting those who had lost their jobs.
Insomniac's message also expressed faith and confidence in its former employees and urged any developers that were currently hiring to consider former Insomniac individuals. It closed with an expression of gratitude to those who had contributed to the studio and a promise that they wouldn't be forgotten. Based on replies to the tweet, plenty of fans were heartbroken by the news and moved by Insomniac's response. Others, it seems, were shocked that layoffs could hit such a successful developer.
While stories like this have become common since last year, it's still sad to see more people losing their jobs. There is still hope for them, of course. The Baldur's Gate 3 developer has encouraged employees impacted by layoffs to apply, for example, which shows that some studios are still going strong and creating jobs. Further, Insomniac has stated that it will be helping its former employees in whatever way it can. Still, these positive signs may not be much consolation to people currently out of work.
For those concerned about what this news could mean for the industry, there's sadly little to be optimistic about at the moment. A recent report indicates Blizzard could be experiencing more layoffs soon, indicating that things may get worse before they get better for the industry. For now, fans and industry observers can only offer support and encouragement to affected employees and hope for better times to come.
