Horizon Call of the Mountain climbs to Best VR game at the Golden Joystick Awards

I would say Lies of P is one of the games that came out this year that surprised a lot of people. A Soulsborne game inspired by Carlo Collodi's novel The Adventures of Pinocchio, it managed to surprise a lot of people with its great setting, surprisingly fun combat, and challenge, which is something that we have come to expect from the genre it is based on. The game received generally positive reviews across the board, and now, Apple has awarded it with the Mac Game of the Year award during its 2023 App Store Awards.

Russell T. Davies’ return to Doctor Who as showrunner is the kind of Hail Mary thrown out by a franchise dangerously close to drowning. He left at the top of his game, handing the keys to Steven Moffat, who built up the show to a frenzied peak during Matt Smith’s run. The show broke viewing figures in 2012, and also finally broke through as a bona fide phenomenon in America thanks to a heavily marketed partnership with BBC America. While RTD (as he’s known by fans) saw further success with critically acclaimed shows like A Very English Scandal and It’s A Sin, Chris Chibnall’s tenure at Doctor Who was much less successful, and the show reportedly came close to being canceled as Jodie Whittaker’s run as the first female Doctor was poorly critically reviewed, and saw ratings go into free-fall.

Neil Druckmann is expected to appear live to receive the Andrew Yoon Legend Award at the 2024 New York Game Awards.

It’s no secret that in a year of incredible games, Baldur’s Gate 3 is arguably at the top. Not only is it the highest-rated game of 2023 on Metacritic and Opencritic, but of its 353,326 user reviews on Steam, 96 percent are positive for an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating.

2023 may not quite be done yet, but the game-of-the-year conversation is already beginning to heat up. Case in point, the Golden Joystick Awards, one of the longest-running video game awards shows with winners being voted on by the UK public, has announced their winners. The big winner was Baldur’s Gate 3, which walked away with “Ultimate Game of the Year” and six other awards. The rest of the winner’s field was quite divided, with only two other games, Final Fantasy XVI and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, receiving more than one award. Some games that seemed to be frontrunners earlier in the year, like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and the Resident Evil 4 remake, only received a single trophy.

Baldur's Gate 3 gobbled up five awards in London today at The Golden Joystick Awards, an annual event put on by PC Gamer's publisher. That's Larian CEO Swen Vincke hugging the haul with a big grin in the photo above, which was posted on X by Larian director of publishing Michael Douse.
