Kamiya confirmed the news with his own Tweets. “As announced on the official Platinum Games X account, I will be leaving Platinum Games on October 12, 2023,” he said. “This came after a lot of consideration based on my own beliefs and was by no means an easy decision to make. However, I feel this outcome is for the best. I will continue to create in my Hideki Kamiya way. I hope you’ll keep your eyes peeled.”
There are unconfirmed reports that Kamiya has blocked Platinum Games on Twitter, his own message does seem to suggest that there is some beef with the company.
Kamiya began his career in the gaming industry in the early 1990s when he joined Capcom and worked on Resident Evil 2 where he served as a planner. His breakout moment came when he directed Devil May Cry, released in 2001. This game introduced stylish and fast-paced action gameplay with an emphasis on combos and stylish combat, setting a new standard for the action genre and started a successful franchise for the publisher.
Kamiya continued to work on other notable titles during his time at Capcom, including Viewtiful Joe and Okami, both of which received critical acclaim for their unique art styles and gameplay mechanics.
In 2006, Kamiya left Capcom and joined the game development company Platinum Games (formerly Seeds Inc.), which he co-founded along with other former Capcom employees. At Platinum Games, he directed several more successful titles, including Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, and The Wonderful 101.
Kamiya’s games often feature strong and memorable female protagonists and are known for their challenging yet rewarding gameplay. His work is celebrated for pushing the boundaries of what action games can be in terms of mechanics, storytelling, and style.
