Bayonetta Creator Feels “Very Refreshed” After Leaving PlatinumGames

The Gears of War franchise was among the biggest and most popular properties in gaming in the Xbox 360 era, back when Epic Games delivered an excellent trilogy of revolution third person shooters that spawned an army of games trying to emulate its success with cover-based shooting mechanics, and though the series is obviously still a successful one, it’s fair to say that it’s lost some of the luster it once had.

It's hard to imagine blockblustery first-person shooting today without Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's online progression systems, which - inasmuch as you can assign this much clout to a single game or developer - transformed the genre back in 2007 by reinventing multiplayer as a kind of RPG. Shooters without COD-style gear levelling ladders do exist, not least Counter-Strike 2, but most of the juggernauts depend on such fixtures, especially now that free-to-play service models have become the norm. So it's jarring to hear from Mackey McCandlish, one of Modern Warfare's original developers, that the old Infinity Ward team were split over the act of using XP to unlock guns, with some worrying it would be "unfair".

Two weeks after announcing his surprise exit from Platinum Games—the studio he co-founded back in the mid-2000s—Hideki Kamiya has departed in the most Hideki Kamiya way ever. The Bayonetta creator peeled out of Platinum's parking lot in a Lamborghini, announcing that he's «off to the unemployment centre» and starting a brand new YouTube channel.

PlatinumGames’ former vice president, Hideki Kamiya, has launched a YouTube channel and said he feels “very refreshed” after quitting the company he co-founded.

Earlier this week, Rockstar quietly added a 60fps toggle to Red Dead Redemption on PlayStation 5. The game, which was released back in August for both PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, can be played on PS5 thanks to backwards compatibility. And now, that little toggle gives PlayStation 5 users a new framerate to play around with while exploring the Wild West.

PlatinumGames' co-founder Hideki Kamiya has told a fan to ask the studio about the current status of Project G.G. following the announcement of his departure.

Hideki Kamiya has confirmed he will be leaving Japanese studio PlatinumGames on 12th October 2023. The director of classics like Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, and Okami, Kamiya shared the news on Twitter and explained the decision was «based on my own beliefs and was by no means an easy decision to make». It sounds like Kamiya could stay in the gaming industry following his departure, though, as he says he'll «continue to create in my Hideki Kamiya way».
