It was recently reported that Apple could host its special event on September 13 to announce the iPhone 15 lineup and the Apple Watch Series 9. While the company plans to introduce a Dynamic Island on the standard iPhone 15 models, the 'Pro' models would still take the lead regarding new additions and changes. However, the Apple Watch Series 9 is also expected to rock its fair share of improvements compared to the last few generations. These changes will make the wearable worth the upgrade despite little to no differences in terms of design.
The Apple Watch Series 8 launched last year with minor upgrades over its predecessor and this year the design is expected to be the same, according to leaker "Instant Digital" on Weibo. Since last year, we have heard only little details on the device and none of them reflect any design differences compared to the Series 8. However, the Apple Watch Series 9 will feature one giant aspect that could potentially compel you to upgrade. Despite no visual differences, the Series 9 is speculated to house a powerful S9 chip based on the A15 Bionic chip.
Since the debut of the Apple Watch Series 6, Apple upgraded the S6 chip with faster CPU performance compared to the S5 chip. The chip was based on the A13 Bionic chip fabricated on TSMC's 7nm process. The same chip with a different name was brought forward to the Series 7 and Series 8 with Apple claiming 20 percent faster app load times. When we say that the S9 chip will be based on Apple's A15 Bionic chip, it means that it will be fabricated on a 5nm process. This will be a huge upgrade for the Apple Watch as it improves a few important aspects of the wearable.
With the S9 chip on the Apple Watch Series 9, the performance will see a major gain with enhanced computational and graphical performance. Since the S9 chip will be potentially based on a 5nm process, we can also expect improved efficiency. With the lower power-hungry nature of the chip, the S9 will enable better battery life on the Apple Watch Series 9. watchOS 10 is potentially the biggest update the Apple Watch has received since it launched back in 2015 and the new chip will deliver a smooth and fluid user experience.
Alongside the Apple Watch Series 9, Apple will also upgrade the Apple Watch Ultra 2 with the S9 chip. The Apple Watch Ultra is also expected to feature a black titanium finish this year and a new pink color for the Series 9. As mentioned earlier, details are short on this year's wearable so be sure to take the news with a pinch of salt.
