The technical test for Hades 2 has given us a few hints about what happened to Zagreus, Hades, and Persephone in the time between the first game and the second.
One of the coolest things about Hades 2 is that it gives us a brand-new protagonist to play as - Melinoe, the princess of the Underworld and the daughter of Hades. As awesome as Melinoe and her unique playstyle are, that hasn't stopped fans from collectively being worried about the fate of everyone's favourite character - Zagreus.
Ever since the reveal trailer for Hades 2 showed a different child of Hades as the central character, fans have been wondering what could have happened to put Zagreus out of commission and for him to not be the one chasing down his dad again. Although we still don't really know the specifics, the technical test has given us a very good idea of what's happened.
Although the Technical Test for Hades 2 only lets players experience a fraction of what the Early Access release will have in store, it does still set up the game's story nicely and highlights why Melinoe is the main character. After you die for the first time and get sent to The Crossroads, the new hub for the game, Melinoe can interact with a special painting inside a tent.
That painting shows Hades, Persephone, and an older Zagreus holding baby Melinoe, which gives us our first look at Zagreus' updated design for Hades 2 (although it's likely to change again since that painting was done while she was a baby). Zag looks much like he did in the last game, but is noticeably taller than he once was.
Although Zagreus hasn't shown up in Hades 2 so far, I'm betting that Melinoe will have to fight him at some point and that he'll eventually be added to the Crossroads once you've beaten the game enough times.
A new look at Zagreus isn't the only thing the painting reveals, however. When interacting with it, a caption will pop up that hints at what has happened to Melinoe's family. One variant of it reads, "The titan has your family in his thrall, or worse... what has he done with them?". Since we already know Hades is in trouble from the game's reveal trailer, it seems the same can be said for Persephone and Zagreus.
Without any warning, Hades 2 has launched into early access on both Steam and the Epic Games Store for players to hack and slash through the levels.
Hades 2 is finally out now in early access, giving us all the chance to jump in and give protagonist Melinoe a spin for the first time. Of course, Hades 2 isn't fully feature complete yet, with multiple big updates planned for later this year and in 2025, so questions have been raised as to exactly how much Hades 2 we'll get to play before we hit a wall. Thankfully, developer Supergiant is on hand to clear that up.

Supergiant Games’ technical test for Hades 2 will be coming to an end on April 29th. As promised, it went on for longer than a week and less than a month, but appears to have been successful. 2020's Hades was game of the year for so many, and it's clear why.
Supergiant Games just treated Hades fans to an extensive look at the game's upcoming sequel. Seriously — the developer hosted a three-hour livestream that showed off Hades II's gameplay, new features and mechanics, as well as the new designs for its characters based on the gods of Greek mythology. Supergiant's Creative Director Greg Kasavin and Studio Director Amir Rao demonstrated the abilities of the game's new protagonist, Melinoë. While she's the sister of Zagreus, the first title's protagonist, and Hades II is a direct sequel to the original, Kasavin and Rao said players don't need to have prior knowledge of the first game and of Greek mythology to enjoy it. Old fans, however, will catch «delightful references» here and there.
