2024 continues to make its case as being the year of the anime and anime-adjacent video game, this time with a release date announcement for the upcoming Gundam Breaker 4. The newest entry in the Gunpla building series will hit shelves on August 29, 2024, on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5 as well as PC.
Preorders are already open and bring prospective customers a load of virtual goodies. Check out the announcement trailer posted by the official Sony PlayStation YouTube channel:
For the uninitiated, Gundam Breaker 4 is the sequel to 2016's Gundam Breaker 3, which came out on PlayStation 4 and Vita. What's important to note, though, is that the entry did not make its way past the Asian market. Anyone who was interested in the game had to import it.
Instead, the West received New Gundam Breaker, which was universally panned. It currently sits at a 43 on Metacritic and is overall considered a disaster. It's a welcome surprise that all these years later, Bandai Namco is trying its hand at a new localized entry.
Gundam Breaker is different from other Gundam games in that it invokes many of the key tenets of the popular Gunpla model building hobby. Players are encouraged to create their own unique mobile suit utilizing various parts that they can collect from defeating other mobile suits. In other words, the loot you earn can then be used to your benefit as you take on missions or go online.
Additionally, just like the real life hobby, the customization goes beyond just adding various parts to make a suit. Painting, weathering and decals allow users to make their Gunpla unique to them. According to Bandai Namco's official website, users can also take their creation into the Diorama Mode, where you can create special unique scenes to pose your model in, complete with backgrounds and special effects.
When Gundam Breaker 4 launches this August, it'll be another entry into what has already been a banner year for anime fans. Already in 2024, fans have received DLC for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and Naruto x Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections. Additionally, the first-ever Jujutsu Kaisen video game debuted along with Sand Land.
Just this Thursday, it was reported that Future Trunks will be the next Dragon Ball character to join Fortnite, and Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero has received numerous character announcements in the leadup to its potential late 2024 release.

Amazon started canceling pre-orders for upcoming Nintendo Switch games last month without explanation. Those games have remained unavailable on Amazon ever since, and now Walmart has followed suit. Online pre-orders for Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door at the big box store have been canceled, just like they were on Amazon a month ago. Walmart has been emailing apologies to those affected to let them know the game will be available in store when it's released on May 23.
It’s best not to put too much stock in Gundam Breaker 4’s name. Despite its title, it’s not the fourth game in the series. That honor goes to New Gundam Breaker, which Bandai Namco prefers to overlook due to its middling reviews and overall poor reputation with the fanbase. Instead, Gundam Breaker 4 will be the fifth console release in the now decade-old series, and what Bandai Namco hopes will be a fresh start for the franchise overall.
