Google Pixel 8 vs. Pixel 8 Pro: What's the Difference?

Google today updated its smartphone lineup with the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro. They share many features, so you may be wondering which one is best for you. Full reviews are in the works, but until then—and before you place that preorder—let's walk through their differences.
Google's Pixel phones always run in multiple sizes, just like the iPhone 15 and Galaxy S23 families. The Pixel 8, which is the smaller of the two, measures 5.9 by 2.8 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.6 ounces, while the Pixel 8 Pro comes in larger and heavier at 6.4 by 3.0 by 0.3 inches and 7.5 ounces. The Pixel 8 Pro is about the same size as the Pixel 7 Pro, but the Pixel 8 is a bit shorter than the 6.1-inch tall Pixel 7.
Both Pixel 8 devices use Gorilla Glass to protect the screen, but the Pixel 8 uses Gorilla Glass Victus while the Pixel 8 Pro gets the newer Gorilla Glass Victus 2. They both have an equal amount of scratch resistance but Victus 2 should be better when dropped on rough surfaces like concrete. Both the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro are IP68 rated, which means they are dustproof and can withstand being submerged in shallow water for a short time.
Google stuck with a 6.7-inch OLED display for the newest Pro, which is the same size as the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. The Pixel 8 Pro has a resolution of 2,992 by 1,344 pixels for a density of 489ppi and a variable refresh rate that can go run from 1Hz to 120Hz. Of note, the pixel count is lower than last year's 7 Pro, which had a 3,120-by-1,440-pixel resolution.
The Pixel 8 has a 6.2-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2,400 by 1,080 pixels for a density of 428ppi and a variable refresh rate that can switch from 60Hz to 120Hz. Those refresh rates mean that animations should be smooth on both phones, but the Pixel 8 Pro should be able to save battery life by dropping down to a 1Hz refresh rate when needed.
These phones can get bright. The Pixel 8 Pro's screen averages 1,600 nits and reaches a peak brightness of 2,400 nits. The regular Pixel 8 averages 1,400 nits and maxes out at 2,000 nits. This is a big improvement compared to the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, which topped out at 1,400 nits and 1,500 nits, respectively. Either Pixel 8 device should be able to take on direct sunlight with ease thanks to those max brightness values.
