Five years after the release of the last game in the franchise, Gears 6 still isn't official, but that may change soon, according to new rumors.
On today's episode of the Kinda Funny Xcast, Jeff Grubb said:
I've heard some stuff might be happening with Gears 6 this summer, so I think that tease sounds about right to me. That seems like what we can expect.
Today, industry veteran Nate Najda, mostly known as shinobi602, also quoted a post on the ResetEra board about the new stunning Senua's Saga: Hellblade II screenshots with the following addendum:
Wait until you see Gears 6. People aren't ready.
Gears developer The Coalition was the first triple-A studio to upgrade to Unreal Engine 5 in May 2021. Just a couple of months later, they showed off an impressive UE5 demo called Alpha Point, which ran on Xbox Series X.
However, we didn't really get any UE5 games from them yet. That's because the studio's side projects were canceled, as reported by Grubb in early 2023.
The Coalition has canceled its smaller non-Gears project. I have previously reported, that to get up to speed with Unreal Engine 5, The Coalition was planning to take on a smaller non-Gears project before moving on to Gears 6. That game was in the works, but they were also doing other stuff alongside that, including most prominently, in addition to their support work, that Matrix demo. That was not the smaller project. It was a separate thing, but it does seem like they feel like, well, we are up to speed because we worked on The Matrix, so they have canceled that smaller project as well as another project. So there's been two games canceled there. This was reflected in the layoffs at Microsoft, which did hit The Coalition a little bit. The studio is going to move on fully to Gears 6.
To be clear, even if the next Gears were to be teased at this year's Xbox Showcase (likely to air on Sunday, June 9), it would probably be launched in late 2025 at the earliest. The Coalition is also busy with the Netflix live action feature film and animated series adaptations, by the way.
