AI is the theme of the year, and it was certainly in evidence at Gartner's annual IT Symposium conference in Orlando, which started this morning with a keynote titled "We Shape AI, AI Shapes Us." In the keynote, Gartner analysts began by imploring the audience of CIOs and technology executives to focus on the profound shift in the relationship between humans and machines brought about by the emergence of AI.
"Machines have evolved from tools to teammates," said Gartner Distinguished Analyst Don Scheibenreif. He quoted Gartner surveys indicating that 51% of CEOs expect CIOs or other tech leaders to lead their generative AI efforts. However, he said only 47% of CIOs and tech leaders are confident that their enterprise will mitigate the risks of AI.
He and Mary Mesaglio, another Gartner Distinguished Analyst, laid out a three-part roadmap for preparing to deal with AI: create "lighthouse principles" for AI that align with the values of your organization, make your data AI ready, and implement AI security.
Much of the focus was on how the role of machines is changing from a tool to a friend, protector, therapist, boss, customer, threat, etc. Mesaglio said that young children won't remember a time when machines didn't talk back, and how many will think of machines as friends. Scheibenreif has written a book on "When Machines Become Customers."
"AI is the new machine, and you are in a relationship with it," he said, so we need to be intentional with it.
The pair spent the largest part of the keynote discussing what they called the "Opportunity AI Radar," which divides AI initiatives into four categories, split between "everyday AI" and "game-changing AI."
Mesaglio explained that everyday AI is focused on helping us do what we do more efficiently and said that 77% of CIO are focused on this. This splits into two categories: The most obvious is front-office tasks, such as call center applications, but there are also many back-office functions, such as UCSD using AI to spot wildfires when they are small, before an emergency call comes in.
Game-changing AI, she said, is focused on creativity and new business models. This includes both extending core capabilities and creating new products and services.
Scheibenreif cited examples such as the IRS using AI to improve tax collection, extending its core capabilities, and Bloomberg introducing a new Bloomberg GPT service. For game-changing technologies, Mesaglio said it is important to understand that AI cannot be just a technology initiative but needs to be an enterprise-wide one. She said you need to have conversations about where you will and will not play.
"Everyday AI will go from dazzling to ordinary with remarkable speed," Mesaglio said. It can offer many

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier is reporting that the conclusion of Destiny 2’s Light and Darkness saga, The Final Shape, has been delayed and will now launch in June 2024. Destiny 2 maker Bungie is among the latest video game studios to be hit with layoffs. First reported by Bloomberg, the downsizing is part of a wide restructuring across Sony Interactive Entertainment, with no official numbers available yet. Based on social media posts from affected workers, the communications, social media, and publishing departments at the studio were hit the hardest. Sony acquired Bungie in January 2022 in a $3.6 billion (about Rs. 29,973 crore) deal, enabling them to function independently and push forward the former's plans for more live-service games. The studio is also delaying its upcoming titles — a Destiny 2 expansion called The Final Shape and a reboot of Marathon, Bungie's first-person shooter title from 1994.
Update: Bungie CEO Pete Parsons took to X/Twitter to share some thoughts on the layoffs.
