Geoff Keighley has revealed that this year's Gamescom Opening Night Live will be more focused on updates about already revealed games than new titles, a shift he's trying to make clear ahead of its airing on August 22.
"It's going to be an exciting show with new looks at many announced upcoming games like Alan Wake 2 and Black Myth Wukong," Keighley said to VGC. "This year's ONL is less about announcing brand new projects, and more about giving fans updates on some of the biggest games due out over the next year."

Nintendo is making an appearance at Gamescom for the first time in four years, so we might see more of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the Mario RPG remake, or any others of its packed release schedule in further detail. Mortal Kombat 1 is due out next month and could make an appearance as it did at EVO and Summer Game Fest. And we'll see Xbox, Bandai Namco, Ubisoft, and Embracer in attendance, all of which have a slew of games coming out from Star Wars Outlaws to Starfield to Tekken 8.
Last year's Opening Night Live ran for two hours with over 35 games, so we might see a similar scope for 2023. We don't know exactly what will be shown off next week, but Keighley said that the focus is on games releasing within the next 12 months. That could mean anything from Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown to STALKER 2. However, Sony will be skipping Gamescom this year, so don't expect to see anything from Spider-Man during the showcase.
While Gamescom is a physical event held in Germany, Opening Night Live is handled by The Game Awards and is streamed digitally across the world. 13 million people tuned in to watch last year across various streams. You don't need to physically be there to see all of the trailers or reveals, but Keighley told VGC that the team is "always trying to find ways to create synergy between what's happening on the floor and inside ONL".
The only games confirmed so far for this year's ONL are the two Keighley mentioned, Alan Wake 2 and Black Myth Wukong, so as of right now, there's no idea as to what this year's show will look like. However, we don't have to wait long to find out as it airs next Tuesday, in only a week.
If you want to watch it, you can find the stream on Twitch or YouTube at 8pm CET, i.e. 7pm BST or 2pm EDT.

Amazon has announced the first expansion for its open world MMO New World.
Ultra Pro Wrestling’s showcase has dropped and with it comes the first in-game footage and a metric-ton of roster announcements. We got to see intros that pay homage to Virtual Pro Wrestling 2’s full walkouts from the backstage area to the ring with “Blue Collar” Bill Dollar facing “Sir” Oliver Buckingham. The light and hard strikes and grapples were shown off and the strikes definitely have the same feel as No Mercy in terms of reactions and selling. The grapples seem a tad floaty, but this is pre-alpha footage and that can always be tightened up. The go-behind animation definitely needs some work and the snap German based on one of Dr. Death’s variants in the Aki engine looks pretty good overall.
What is the role of artificial intelligence in human activity? Is it that of command and control or an aid to achieving set targets or goals? While one points towards a benevolent AI, the other may refer to something dangerous. Speaking on the issue of AI on Friday was Salesforce India CEO Arundhati Bhattacharya who said that artificial intelligence and generative technology is more of an assistant than a self-functioning unit.
Cloud Imperium's Star Citizen will soon receive over $600 million from backers, according to the game's website. At time of writing, the game is a little over $5,000 away from hitting that funding benchmark, and continues to be one of the most expensive games to ever be developed.
Grey’s Anatomy has joined the list of shows and movies delayed amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The hugely popular series, which is about to enter its 20th season, no longer has a release date set.
To hear Bethesda tell it, Starfield is very much like space as perceived by Douglas Adams: You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to Starfield. In light of that, a New Game+ mode might seem like a bit of a waste, and yet according to a new GQ feature on the game, it will have one—of some sort.
In an interview with GQ, Starfield Director and Executive Producer Todd Howard confirmed the open-world RPG does, in fact, have a New Game Plus mode.
GTA 6 is likely on its way, though we’re still waiting for an initial announcement from Rockstar. With the GTA 6 release date still pending, one Grand Theft Auto player storms the stage of Gamescom 2023, interrupting host Geoff Keighley to shout questions about the next Rockstar sandbox game and sequel to GTA 5. This appears to be the same person who has previously invaded live television shows to ask about GTA 6 and, most recently, a return to Vice City.
Asus has unleashed a splurge of premium new kit at the Gamescom show in Germany. The highlight has to be the Asus ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM gaming monitor, a 4K 32-inch OLED beauty. Asus also announced 34-inch and 49-inch OLED panels, plus motherboards, Wi-Fi routers and plenty more.
