One avid gamer has built a fully-functional, portable version of Nintendo's beloved fifth generation console, the Nintendo 64. In an era where handheld gaming is increasing in popularity each and every year, fan-made hardware modifications are becoming more relevant than ever before, as they provide gamers with a way to take their retro home console libraries with them on the go. This Nintendo 64 handheld in particular, though, might just be one of the best of these physical mods yet.
Despite suffering from mildly underwhelming sales and hardware limitations that held the console back even in its heyday, the Nintendo 64 garnered a passionate fanbase over the years. Though fans will still continue to debate whether the N64 or the PS1 was better overall, the fifth generation console was nonetheless regarded fondly among many gamers, thanks to its various high-quality exclusives. If there's one thing the Nintendo 64 wasn't regarded as, though, it was being lightweight. Though the PS1 got a more portable, slimmer redesign several years into its lifespan, the N64 got nothing of the sort. This new hardware modification from fans, however, is likely to accommodate the desire for a more portable iteration of the console.
As revealed on the r/n64 subreddit in a post by Reddit user CrazyGadgetMods, a member of the hardware modding community on the BitBuilt forums, named Nicholas298, has created a design for a portable Nintendo 64 dubbed the N64HHv2. This handheld version of the beloved Nintendo home console was made using an actual N64 motherboard that was «trimmed with a dremel and rewired to custom power / audio / video / controller solutions.» With the help of a blueprint provided by Nicholas and the aid of other members from the BitBuilt forums, CrazyGadgetMods was able to build two replicas of these handheld N64s, one being silver and the other green.
CrazyGadgetMods elaborates on the specifications of the device, stating that the portable redesign can last for «approximately 2 hours» on a single charge via a USB-C port, thanks to the two 3500mAh 18650 battery cells it holds within it. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the handheld, though, is that it has a slot large enough to fit real N64 cartridges. This means that fans using this handheld could take games from their physical Nintendo 64 collections and play them wherever they want, almost as if the console was an oversized Game Boy.
Though the creation of this device is certainly an impressive feat, it isn't the first time that modders have rebuilt Nintendo 64s as tiny handheld consoles. Back in 2020, a YouTuber named GmanModz created two different types of N64 portables, with one sporting a clamshell design akin to the Game Boy Advance SP and the

Following the confirmation that the next iteration of the Nintendo Switchwill be unveiled before March 2025, recent leaks may have just revealed the hardware users can expect to find within the hybrid console. The current iteration of the ever-popular console is notorious for its less-than-desirable specs; even when it launched in 2017, it's power was significantly less than competitors like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While the so-called Switch 2 likely won't rival Sony and Microsoft's machines in terms of performance, it sounds like it will at least be a major step up for Nintendo.

While many classic Nintendo consoles are known for fetching decent prices among collectors, the most recent one to hit the market may end up being the most expensive ever sold at auction. The world of video game collecting has exploded in recent years as rare games and consoles have become notorious for their impressive prices when sold to the right bidder. Original copies of NES classics like and have been known to be especially valuable, but an early build of a popular console may be even more lucrative for the seller.
Nintendo recently revealed its updated sales numbers for the Switch console, not too long after the company acknowledged its eventual follow-up. Ever since hitting the market in early 2017, the Nintendo Switch has been a global sales juggernaut, bolstered by chart-topping exclusives like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and last year’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie has also helped sell more Nintendo Switch consoles in countries like Mexico and South America after landing in theaters in 2023.
Nintendo has announced plans to unveil a new flagship Switch console within this fiscal year, aiming to keep its momentum in the gaming market. The company, led by President Shuntaro Furukawa, confirmed the successor to the ageing Switch will be revealed by March 2025. However, there won't be any specifics shared during the upcoming Nintendo Direct event in June.
With the first anniversary of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom right around the corner, a fan chose to celebrate by creating some festive rockets in the game and sharing a video of their efforts. One creative The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom player has recently managed to put together an adorable fishing boat. Their cute contraption later made the rounds online, adding to the countless feats of engineering that Tears of the Kingdom fandom has managed to date.
One prominent Persona leaker has made a claim that multiple upcoming games from Sega and its subsidiary Atlus will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. While the leaker hasn't named any of these titles specifically and Nintendo hasn't even officially confirmed the Switch 2's existence, some sources believe this could mean more Persona remakes will make their way to the console.
