Gameplay footage for the rumored Sonic the Hedgehog battle royale spin-off has just been leaked online, giving interested fans a glimpse at its fast-paced multiplayer action. The past couple of years have seen the release of several Sonic the Hedgehog games, from the experimental open-world format of Sonic Frontiers to the more traditional 2D platforming of Sonic Superstars. 2024 looks to be yet another banner year for the Blue Blur, with several promising tie-in projects on the horizon.
At the very beginning of the year, rumors started to spread of Sega planning to launch a Fall Guys-style multiplayer Sonic spin-off game at some point in 2024. Tentatively named Sonic Toys Party, this game will supposedly be a free-to-play, live-service mobile title that sees players race along obstacle courses with either Sonic or one of the franchise’s many supporting characters in frantic 32-player match-ups. Sonic Toys Party will also reportedly feature crossovers with other fabled Sega IPs like Persona, and Sonic’s signature rings will be used as an in-game currency to unlock new costumes, emotes, and other cosmetics.
Gameplay footage of Sonic Toys Party was recently leaked online. As shown on the Sonic-based YouTube channel The Sonic Show, and reported by Insider Gaming, this footage features toy-like versions of several classic characters from the Sonic universe running along an obstacle course in a manner that indeed resembles Fall Guys. Several classic Sonic hallmarks are present, such as boost ramps, massive loop-de-loops, and robotic Badnik enemies that stand between the players and their goal. There is even a moment when the camera shifts to a 2D side view reminiscent of Sonic Superstars.
While there is currently no official announcement or release date for Sonic Toys Party, past rumors have suggested that it will launch sometime this summer on Android and iOS-compatible mobile devices. Sega Hardlight, the studio behind past mobile spin-offs like Sonic Dream Team, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, and Sonic Dash, isn’t developing Sonic Toys Party. Instead, it has been theorized that the new game is part of a recent partnership between Sega and Rovio- best known for its work on the Angry Birds series.
There is a lot that is still unknown and unverified about Sonic Toys Party, but the recently leaked gameplay footage shows a promising multiplayer battle royale that blends the colorful, physics-defying platforming of Sonic the Hedgehog with the competitive obstacle course action of Fall Guys. If the rumors are true, then fans might see the latest Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off blast onto mobile devices sometime later this year.
