The first February PlayStation Plus monthly game has been announced, with Square Enix confirming that Foamstars will be launching exclusively for PS5 and PS4 on 6th February as one of the three games included for all PS Plus subscribers.
Foamstars will be available exclusively through PS Plus for the first month, but from 5th March onwards will be available for $29.99.
The game is is a 4v4 foam-party themed shooter, where you’ll fight as much for territory, as you will for the objective or enemy team takedowns. It’s rather like Splatoon in that way, but Square Enix are putting their own spin on things, with the foam weapons able to build up foam terrain to give a height advantage, for example. Taking out an opponent needs you to first foam them up, before sliding into them with your surfboard for a KO.
Set in Bath Vegas with the Foamstars’ Glorious Party tournament, there will be three online game modes: Smash the Star, Happy Bath Survival and the newly revealed Rubber Duck Party. This features a giant rubber duck that you need to control to advance it to the other team’s side and goal – if you want, you can dance on it to get a speed boost. Each mode will have three bespoke maps at launch.
In addition to head to head matches, a Mission mode will allow for solo and co-op PvE play. Here you’ll protect Bath Vegas from randomised waves of Bubble Beasties, in what is designed as an extension of the main tutorial to help you practice with characters and get your teamwork together.
Square Enix also revealed more about the game’s modes at launch and plans for post-launch content. They don’t view this as a GaaS title, and are instead pledging to support the game with seasons and updates for one year – they could support it for longer, but it’s one year minimum.
There will be new cosmetics, characters, maps and modes added through seasons, and as is standard, Foamstars will have a season pass to work through with both free and premium tracks. The premium season pass will an optional $5.99, getting you immediate access to a season’s new character, but this can be unlocked for free by progressing through the standard track, completing daily, limited-time and weekly challenges.
The first new character will be the Baristador, joining the eight that will be in the game at launch, each with a unique foam gun and superstar skillset.
All in all, Foamstars looks like it could be a fun multiplayer bop, and launching straight into PS Plus ensures that there will be loads of people checking it out in the first few days and weeks.

The development also comes in the heels of the ongoing Australian Open, capitalising on the tennis fever the first Grand Slam of the year brings with it.
