As we all know, if a video game is beloved, it will tend to get lots of attention from its developers/publishers and “blossom” in ways that gamers will typically appreciate. When Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was released on the Nintendo Gamecube in 2003, it was hailed as one of the best games in the franchise. With its unique look, fun story, tight gameplay mechanics, and more, gamers and critics fell in love with it. The game would get spinoffs and a remaster to showcase how good it was. However, many are stunned the game never got a true sequel.
One of the people who know that confusion is the series producer, Akitoshi Kawazu, for in light of the game’s 20th anniversary, the producer released a message detailing his thoughts, and in those thoughts was the hope that he could make a true second installment of the game. Translated by Nintendo Everything, his message notes:
“It’s the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Personally, I feel regret for not being able to satisfy the fans who have been holding out hope for an all-new FFCC game. While there’s so much I’d like to do, I just can’t find the time to do it all. I know that the characters deserve to shine again, yet I’ve been unable to provide them with another adventure. They’re eager to set out to discover the true meaning of the crystals’ blessing, and much like those of us who were cooped up at home for the past few years, they could only gaze up at the skies above their respective towns, day after day. But new trials do await them – ones from which they will grow stronger. Please trust that one day, a brand-new chapter will be added to their adventure.”
That would seem to indicate that, at the very least, he has thought heavily about a sequel and wants nothing more than to create it. Fans would be more than up for that, and it would serve as a nice contrast to the realistic and drama-heavy title that Square Enix recently released.
You can’t deny that it’s a little funny that Kawazu hasn’t been able to do what he wants because he “doesn’t have the time to do it.” In the game industry, that’s a good problem to have as it means you have numerous projects to work on.
But, hopefully, he’ll find the time to make everything work and give fans, and himself, the sequel they all want.
