Epic Games Lays Off 16% of Workforce and Sells Off Bandcamp and Most of SuperAwesome

Image Comics' creator-owned Killadelphia is about to embark on one of the most unlikely crossovers in comic book history (and there have been some doozies). Starting in November's Killadelphia #31, by series creators writer Rodney Barnes and artist Jason Shawn Alexander, the forces of Heaven and Hell will go to war in the streets of Philadelphia, with some well-known characters enlisted on both sides, including Image Comics icons Spawn and Savage Dragon, cult-classic movie monster Blacula, and, just for good measure, the classic literary icon Count Dracula too.

The fleetingly Epic Games-owned online audio distribution company Bandcamp have shed "at least" half their staff in the course of being sold off to Songtradr as part of mass layoffs at Epic this summer. That's according to the union Bandcamp United, who are even now restarting discussions with Epic in the hope of obtaining a better outcome.

Fortnite maker Epic Games has launched a back catalog program to incentivize game developers and publishers to make their old games available on Epic Games Store.

For my money, web-swinging around New York City in Marvel’s Spider-Man is perhaps the singular best game mechanic I’ve come across in the last decade or so. It feels so incredibly right, and almost everything else in that game is built off it. I never really wanted to use fast-travel features, because swinging around was much more fun, and finding hidden missions and helping citizens in trouble as you traverse NYC is almost as rewarding as following the game’s main story. Of course, a great mechanic isn’t enough to make a great game, but Spider-Man is one of the most successful open-world style games I can think of, because it felt packed without being overwhelming.

Did you know AMC makes video games? The television network responsible for Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead has a full-blown publishing label for video games, and it’s shepherded four titles to market since 2020. Its first was a real-time flight simulator from the NYU Game Center Incubator called Airplane Mode, which trapped players in the window seat of a commercial airliner for six literal hours, complete with the small luxuries and major annoyances of actually flying coach. AMC’s IFC channel even produced the in-flight safety video for that game.

Epic Games has announced that it is laying off around 830 employees – around 16% of the company’s total workforce – and splitting off recent acquisitions, with Epic CEO Tim Sweeney admitting that they have been “spending way more money than we earn.”

Fortnite developer Epic Games is set to lay off 870 employees as it seeks to lower costs, a Bloomberg report reveals. In a memo sent to workers earlier today, chief executive officer Tim Sweeney said the company had been spending a lot more money than it was earning for quite some time. He said: «I had long been optimistic that we could power through this transition without layoffs, but in retrospect I see this was unrealistic.»
