Revealed last week, PlayStation Portal is Sony's own answer to remote play on PS5. In other words, it allows players to stream their PS5 games to an eight inch, 1080p screen with DualSense functionality attached to it. Retailing at $199.99 / £199.99 / €219.99, there's been a lot of discussion around whether it's a cost-effective solution to what seems to be a pretty niche problem.

In the world of mobile gaming, a perfect controller can be hard to come by. Even with our personal favourite, the Backbone One, it can feel like you need to make compromises on comfort and accuracy, particularly if you have larger hands or want to take part in longer sessions. You can always connect a regular gamepad via Bluetooth, but if you don't have a good way to set your phone up as a display or there are connection issues, this isn't a perfect fit either.

The PlayStation Portal streaming handheld has quickly become a contentious little device. At first glance, it looks the part of a PSP or Vita successor. However, this thing’s limited to streaming games installed on your PS5 or PS4, which makes its use cases niche to say the least. For those that are interested in it, though, we finally have a release date for the Portal nailed down.

PlayStation Portal, Sony’s $200 handheld for PS5 game streaming, is available to pre-order today before its November 15th launch. The company announced the availability details today in an update to its announcement post from last week. The upcoming device requires a PS5 and a persistent WiFi connection.

PlayStation Portal will launch on November 15 for $199.99 / £199.99 / €219.99 / 29,980 yen, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced. Pre-orders are available now at PlayStation Direct.

If you remember, Sony first introduced the PlayStation Q as their next big accessory device for the PlayStation 5. However, the PlayStation Q became the PlayStation Portal since that initial announcement. This device is made to complement your PlayStation 5 by being able to play your PlayStation 5 games in another room of your home. Think of it as a Nintendo Switch, just without the features that would allow you to take your games on the go.

Sony has announced the release date for its upcoming Remote Play device, PlayStation Portal.

After announcing the PlayStation Project Q in May, earlier this month, Sony formally unveiled the remote play portable device as the PlayStation Portal, confirming that it would be out sometime in 2023. Now, via an update published on the PlayStation Blog, the company has given the handheld device a firm, official release date.

Sony's recently revealed remote play handheld now has an official name and a price tag. It's called PlayStation Portal, and for $199.99 / £199.99 / €219.99, it'll let you stream your PS5 straight to the palm of your hands via WiFi.

The officially named PlayStation Portal is Sony's own dedicated remote play device, allowing you to stream your PS5 to what we think is a slick-looking handheld. Boasting an eight-inch 1080p screen alongside DualSense selling points like adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, actually sitting down with one of these things would probably prove to be a pleasant experience.
