En Garde! Review – A Short But Satisfying Thrust

I suspect players are going to be finding little references and additions in Starfieldfor some time to come, but they've already found the one most likely to make me cry. Bethesda has slipped in a tribute to Alex Hay, a long-time fan of games like Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and the Fallouts who died of cancer several months ago, and whose disappointment at not being able to make it to Starfield's release date was preserved in his viral Reddit thread from earlier this year.

Starfield reviews are flooding in ahead of the game's early access launch, and as it stands over on Metacritic, Bethesda's long-awaited space epic is scoring lower than The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim but higher than Fallout 4.

Bethesda's spacefaring adventure has its moments with impressive scale, satisfying combat, and some worthwhile side quests, but its shallow RPG systems and uninspired vision of the cosmos make for a journey that's a mile wide, but an inch deep.

Yet out on the battlefield, Sea of Stars often shines more brilliantly than the luminaries around it.
