Binance is the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world, and has been under investigation by US authorities for years over allegations of offshore money laundering. Now it has announced that CEO and founder Changpeng Zao is to step down from his role and plead guilty to violating US money-laundering regulations (via BBC), alongside Binance itself pleading guilty and reaching a settlement with regulators that will come to an eye-watering $4.3 billion.

On Friday, OpenAI, the industry leading machine learning firm and creator of ChatGPT, ousted its co-founder and CEO Sam Altman. It was an unexpected move and the board expressed the reasons for its decision in extraordinary terms, saying it «no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading» after he had not been «consistently candid» with them. The news drove a frenzy of speculation in the tech world over the weekend, with Microsoft in particular (which has a multi-billion investment in OpenAI) said to have been blindsided by the move, amid speculation that Altman would be re-hired by the firm.

The current Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, was named interim CEO with immediate effect shortly after the firing of OpenAI’s former Chief Executive, Sam Altman. Murati has expressed disdain over this decision and has openly sided with her ex-boss, and with her latest post, which says that OpenAI is nothing without its people, a resignation letter might be handed over from her side soon.

With these cuts — and more to come — Embracer expects to lower that number to below $1 million by the fiscal year’s end. The company, which is known for its rapid expansion and industry consolidation, has 15,701 employees as of late September, according to its latest financial report.
