Dungeons and Dragons just revealed the release dates of a half dozen new books it has planned over the next year. These six new Dungeons and Dragons books include the revised Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual, which will be released as a part of the One D&D project.
In 2022, Dungeons and Dragons introduced One D&D, the project name for the evergreen revisions to 5th Edition in celebration of its 10-year anniversary, and Dungeons and Dragons’ 50th birthday. Over the subsequent months, Wizards of the Coast has released several D&D playtests, with a new Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual initially planned for a 2024 release.
Now, Dungeons and Dragons has given players solid dates for these three core rule books. According to a recent D&D blog post, the new Player’s Handbook will be released on September 17, with the Dungeon Master’s Guide planned for November 12. The new Monster Manual won’t be finished this year, but is expected on February 18, 2025. In addition to this, fans can expect Vecna: Eve of Ruin and Quests from the Infinite Staircase on May 21 and July 16 respectively, with The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons: 1970-1977 coming out on June 18, right between the two upcoming adventure books.
The new core rule books will compile all the information that was gathered over the many One D&D playtests and forge them into a new tabletop experience. While not truly a new edition, the 2024-2025 version will update the rules for a more modern audience and promises to be a more user-friendly version of Dungeons and Dragons. The updated rules will be backwards compatible with the original5th Edition, so players who prefer the old books should still be able to use them alongside future products.
Vecna: Eve of Ruin is a new high-level adventure path that focuses on the eponymous villain. After gaining popularity from his appearance in Stranger Things, Dungeons and Dragons is bringing the iconic D&D villain front and center in the multiversal plot to save existence. Quests from the Infinite Staircase is similarly steeped in classic Dungeons and Dragons, featuring six retro D&D adventures revised for 5th Edition.
Exciting as this news is, Dungeons and Dragons has been under a lot of scrutiny lately. Recent bad press surrounding Hasbro’s layoffs and AI art came less than a year after the controversy surrounding its original intentions to change the D&D Open Gaming License. These events have caused some fans to lose faith in Wizards of the Coast, so hopefully, these new books could be the first step for Dungeons and Dragons to start turning things around with these fans.
