Nostalgia is a helluva drug – and Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is being injected right into our veins. It’s a reminder of a simpler time when gaming wasn’t defined by frame rates, and no one gave a damn about internet forums and “opinions.” It’s a time when someone would pick up the controller, walk their pixelated character around the screen, and kick the tar out of bad guys with Chad names until the credits roll.
Video Game Cartoons: Remember These Shows?
Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons relies on this feel-good factor because nobody is here for 2023 graphics – that’s for sure. Heck, even the story is pulled straight out of a 1980s Cannon action movie. It’s 199X (it’s probably the timeline when Elon Musk goes full Thanos) and there’s a nuclear war set to rage in New York City. It’s up to Billy and Jimmy Lee and their pals to stop a bunch of baddies and flex all their martial arts moves.
This isn’t a particularly deep game from a gameplay perspective. It’s from the NES school of play where there are basic moves and a special combo button – plus the players can pick up weapons and use them. Where this game does get interesting is in the tag-team aspect. It’s actually deeper than initially thought, as the switchover enables another character to leap into action and attack the enemies. By learning how to use this technique effectively, quick tags can help to eliminate a group of enemies in a fast manner while trying to conserve the life energy of both characters.
When Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons starts, there are four characters to choose from, but as you progress and accumulate tokens, you can unlock more characters. Each has their own set of strengths and weaknesses, so the right pairings could help you compensate for what the other character lacks. Choose wisely, or else you could be stuck in a situation with two slow sluggers when a slugger and a nimble fighter pairing is far more balanced.

The game features a roguelite element, which is influenced by the order in which the player selects to play the stages. This impacts several factors, such as the overall difficultly and number of enemies faced, so it does encourage multiple playthroughs in that sense and to keep things fresh.
While there are enough additions to keep players coming back for more, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons does have a limited lifespan. After all the characters are unlocked and the missions have been played, it does start to feel repetitive. That being said, this isn’t the type of game encouraging players to put 500 hours into it and win every single trophy. It’s a quick pick-up-and-play title before someone goes to bed or has time

We’re still a few months away from seeing the eighth mainline entry in the Like a Dragon series. Fortunately, it won’t be long before players meet Kazuma Kiryu again in the spinoff, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. That’s right, Kiryu did such a thorough job erasing his name that he goes by the unsuspecting name of “Joryu”. All the while, he’ll find himself once again embroiled in threats, violence, and underworld intrigue. But those who manage to endure these trials will get treated to a Special Trial Version of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

Perhaps as an ode to the horror movie genre itself, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre starts out with all the same joy and promise of a group of friends preparing for a weekend at a cabin in the woods before things quickly take a turn for the worse. While I definitely enjoyed plenty of my 20 hours with this novel take on the asymmetrical multiplayer blueprint, where three powerful murderers hunt down a team of four elusive teens, getting started wasn’t as smooth as it is in similar games and there’s less to do than expected once you’re up and running. Between that and some seriously frustrating technical issues, there was definitely a chloroform-doused wet blanket over the whole thing.
Baldur's Gate 3 has knocked The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom off the top to become 2023's best-reviewed game.
Overwatch just launched on Steam for the first time, having skipped the platform since its initial launch in 2016. But with recent high-profile controversies and overall dissatisfaction with the state of the game, things aren't going smoothly. In fact, right now, it's going record-breakingly awful.
Outside of death itself, one of the things that haunts humans the most is the idea that we might eventually lose our memories, our sense of self and effectively our existence. Dementia, Alzheimers and other neurodegenerative diseases are frankly terrifying, and it’s with good reason that so much research is being done to find ways to stall and prevent their occurrence. The Gap sees one neuroscientist’s quest to heal his wife send him hurtling into memories and moments from the past, and on into a multiverse where the cure might be found.
Sometimes it’s best to simply start over and try again, taking all the experience and knowledge from a first attempt and feeding it into a better second effort. Lords of the Fallen is a multi-faceted example of exactly this. The original game’s developers went off to create a different Souls-like series, while publisher CI Games held onto this IP, restarting development multiple times before founding new developer Hexworks in 2020. Despite this being Hexworks’ first game, it feels like a well-rounded and considered effort at a thoroughly modern Souls-like.
In late July, the first preview impressions for the Western version of Blue Protocol began to publish worldwide. Although the game had a successful launch in Japan back in June, this was the first opportunity for press to experience and share their thoughts on the Western version of the game, which is set to launch next year.

After months of speculation, the Red Dead Redemption remaster/remake saga hit a damp squelch of an anticlimax yesterday afternoon, when Rockstar proudly announced it was porting the basic version of the original PS3 and Xbox 360 game to the Nintendo Switch and PS4. For $50, no less. Fans were upset.
