Gameloft's racing title Disney Speedstorm is going to start charging real money for battle pass items, and a lot of players are not happy with the developer. As a free-to-play kart racer, Disney Speedstorm offers some fun high speed gameplay, but the battle pass is getting a controversial change.
After getting its full release last year in September, Disney Speedstorm has been one of the newest additions to the kart racing genre. The game is filled with plenty of iconic Disney characters to choose from that can be unlocked via the game's battle pass. In Disney Speedstorm, the battle pass is vital for players who wish to collect new characters, kart parts, or new racing suits. The use of a battle pass is no new concept in free-to-play games, but the system has remained a major point of controversy in gaming since it was first introduced. Although battle passes have become a common occurrence, Disney Speedstorm is making a change that isn't sitting right with a lot of players.
Once Season 7 of Disney Speestorm begins later this month, players will have to buy premium battle pass content with their real-life money. An official announcement on Disney Speedstorm's website broke the news to players. The cost of this content will come at the price of $9.99 USD. One of the biggest draws of Disney Speedstorm has been its free-to-play approach while also featuring great Disney icons, but now players will have to make actual purchases in order to get new content.
The original iteration of the battle pass in Disney Speedstorm allowed players to collect in-game currency that let them purchase characters, cosmetics, and other useful content. However, it appears that this is now coming to an end. Battle passes can be controversial in general, due to criticisms from many that claim the system is predatory towards players. Developer Gameloft's decision to charge actual money for in-game content in Disney Speedstorm has upset many players who prefer being able to earn tokens through playing the game, according to IGN.
The Disney Speedstorm community announcement does not confirm when Season 7 will officially begin.
Although the inclusion of a battle pass system can automatically open a game up to criticism, there have been great examples of good battle pass systems, like in Helldivers 2. However, making the move to start charging real-life money is a choice that is upsetting for many players. The pressure to purchase battle passes can really hinder a game's experience for some, so it will be interesting to see how Gameloft's change to Disney Speedstorm's battle pass will go once the new system launches.

Tekken 8 recently added a battle pass which locks new content behind a paywall, despite the base game retailing at $69.99 with a $30 season pass. It immediately proved controversial, dragging the Steam score down to 'mixed', and things have only gotten worse in the weeks since as it now sits at an even lower 'mostly negative'.
The Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered compilation has reportedly made a change to the game that was not mentioned in the recent update's patch notes, riling up fans about previous promises. The compilation, released earlier this year, brings back the iconic original trilogy of Lara Croft's adventures that turned the franchise into a household name in gaming. The remakes have seen praise for their graphical enhancements to the classic adventure games, as well as several quality-of-life upgrades. Now, however, an unmentioned part of the most recent update is making a controversial change.
Disney Speedstorm always seems to be doing confusing things, but last week they kinda ticked off a lot of their fanbase. The developers of the game recently announced the theme of Season 7, which is Wreck-it Ralph, while right now we are still in Season 6 which is The Little Mermaid.
Gameloft has hinted at a possible U-turn over criticism it has received for future Disney Speedstorm season pass plans.
The latest season for Overwatch 2 finally allows players to permanently unlock and play as Venture, but fans have noticed that despite this new character playing a central role in the latest season, it seems they'll be getting an extremely slim pool of skins to choose from — for now, at least. Though Overwatch 2's Season 10: Venture Forth event does pack a long list of interesting skins for a wide variety of heroes, it appears these come at the cost of cosmetics for the drill-wielding damage hero.

Season 10 is coming with a multitude of new content, cosmetics, and quality-of-life changes to forever change the state of the popular hero shooter. With recent reports indicating that PvE, the entire reason for the sequel, is canceled, Blizzard has gone full steam ahead on optimizing PvP. Season 9 took the time to revamp the not-so-engaging ranked system from 's rough launch, implementing a new system that is more like the originals.

The community is in flames as an announcement from developer Gameloft regarding the game's monetization has prompted players to begin refunding any and all purchases. Released in 2023, the free-to-play race may not be a mainstream hit like its closest competitor but solid reviews and decent post-launch support have helped it establish a solid community of players who enjoy its take on kart-racing and Disney characters. Unfortunately, Gameloft has seemingly burnt many bridges after announcing that all future premium Golden Pass tracks will be locked behind real money.
