Detective Pikachu Returns Trailer Previews New Pokémon Helpers

The concept of a mean-mugging, coffee-guzzling, mystery-solving Pikachu who talks like a human was kind of difficult to wrap one’s mind around before Nintendo dropped its first Detective Pikachu game back in 2018. The original 3DS point-and-click’s simplistic gameplay and forgettable supporting characters both left much to be desired. But its sharp sense of humor and focus on depicting the world from pokémon’s perspectives solidified it as one of the larger franchise’s most inspired spinoffs, which led to a live-action film adaptation that left little doubt of there being a Detective Pikachu Switch sequel on the way.

A common misconception with video game franchises is that if the main game in a series is successful, the follow-up or the spinoff games will be just as awesome because that’s “how things work.” But no, that’s not the case at all. As with most video game titles, it’s the quality and style that will determine if a thing is successful or not. Even if it is successful, that doesn’t mean it’ll have the same success numbers-wise as the original games. So when Detective Pikachu Returns was announced for Switch earlier this year, many gamers were curious about how it would do and how it would be received.

While it does more than enough to justify its existence as a follow-up effort, it also struggles to capitalize on some of the good will the movie earned for the property, instead reverting to a more childish, simplistic narrative and systems.

Playing the first game before seems like the natural step, as the new Nintendo Switch title is a sequel to the original one. Nevertheless, that can be quite complicated, as the previous game was released for a previous generation of consoles. While ’s release is on the Nintendo Switch, the first came out in 2016 for the Nintendo 3DS. As such, access to it at this point can be somewhat difficult.

It’s been a good year for Pokemon fans who have enjoyed DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, as well as plenty of Pokemon TCG releases. We’re also getting a new Detective Pikachu game titled Detective Pikachu Returns. Set to release on October 6, it will continue the mystery-solving adventures of the gruff-voiced yellow rodent.

Detective Pikachu was released back in 2018 outside of Japanese markets. The video game was a Nintendo 3DS exclusive, and in just a few days, we’re finally getting a sequel. If you didn’t catch the announcement, Detective Pikachu Returns was first introduced to the public during the Nintendo Direct this past June. That might give you another game to pick up on the Nintendo Switch this month. However, if you plan to pick up the sequel without having played the first game, this latest video upload will be helpful. Of course, even if you did play the first installment, the video recap might offer a nice refresher of the events that transpired. With that said, it’s a shorter video, as the main points were covered in just under two minutes.

This time around, the pair seeks to get to the bottom of a jewel theft, and judging by trailers, they’re in for a big adventure.

A new has been released by NBC, previewing the last 10 episodes of the series‘ final season ahead of their debut next month. Season 5 is set to resume starting on Wednesday, October 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, with each weekly episode streaming the next day on Peacock.
