It’s no secret that Warner Bros. and Rocksteady’s wasn’t the biggest hit of early 2024. Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO David Zaslav considers it a disappointment that overshadowed WB’s first quarter.
As VGC reported, Zaslav addressed Warner Bros.’ gaming division during the company’s most recent financial presentation. While Hogwarts Legacy was a big success in 2023, Suicide Squad loses out in that comparison. “Unfortunately,” said Zaslav, “the studio’s Q1 financials were overshadowed by the tough [comparison] at Games, following the great performance of Hogwarts Legacy last year and the disappointing release of Suicide Squad in Q1 in our gaming group.”
Chief Financial Officer Gunnar Wiedenfels said something similar later in the presentation. He noted that the differences between the two games’ performance resulted in a “$200 million impact” on Warner Bros. first-quarter earnings.”
Suicide Squad’s underperformance isn’t exactly news. In February, Wiedenfels told investors that the live-service game “has fallen short of our expectations.” He also said that its performance was “setting our games business up for a tough year-over-year comp in Q1.” The launch of Kill the Justice League’s season 1 content doesn’t seem to have turned things around.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League sits at 60% on Metacritic, earning mediocre reviews from critics. Players were not impressed either, and there was a lot of anger from Batman: Arkham fans for how WB and Rocksteady handled that continuity. The game also earned criticism for its heavy use of live service elements.
The Division Heartland, the now-canceled free-to-play take on the looter shooter series, was originally set to be a battle royale mode.
The Division Heartland has been cancelled by Ubisoft, with the publisher confirming the news in a statement to IGN. The major reason for the cancellation is that Ubisoft will be redeploying its resources to focus on other projects like xDefiant and Rainbow Six. The team at Red Storm Entertainment, the developers of The Division Heartland, will be redeployed to the other projects.
GENEVA — U.S. officials raised concerns about China's “misuse of AI” while Beijing's representatives rebuked Washington over "restrictions and pressure" on artificial intelligence, the governments said separately Wednesday, a day after a meeting in Geneva on the technology.

WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav said the entertainment firm's Q1 financials took losses.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was already known to be commercially unsuccessful, but it's now facing a truly humbling comparison with last year's Warner Bros. hit, Hogwarts Legacy.
The CEO and president of Warner Bros Discovery has singled out Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League as the reason for underwhelming Q1 results for its entire Studios division.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a major financial flop for Warner Bros. Discovery, as revealed in a new report. Suicide Squad seemed very promising when it was first announced at the inaugural DC FanDome event back in 2020, with Batman: Arkham series developer Rocksteady returning to its acclaimed DC gaming universe for a new title centered around the rogue’s gallery of Task Force X. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League would take the team of Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark to Metropolis to battle the corrupted heroes of Earth.
After revealing that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League fell short of expectations, Warner Bros. Discovery announced a $200 million impact on revenue due to the game’s failure. The company suffered an impairment charge, with studio revenue dropping by 12 percent year over year to $2.8 billion, per its Q1 2024 results.
Last year, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that the company would be producing new Lord of the Rings movies, but said very little about what they would be about — riddles in the dark, if you will. It’s been a long 15 months since then, but the latest Middle-earth adventure has finally been revealed: Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, directed by and starring Andy Serkis.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has disappointed Warner Bros. Discovery, owner of developer Rocksteady, to the tune of a $200 million hit to revenue.
UPDATE: It has now been revealed the new Lord of the Rings movie has a working title of Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and will be directed by Andy Serkis
