Details regarding the expected console versions of Darkest Dungeon 2 have been revealed ahead of any official announcements thanks to publicly available data. Developer Red Hook Studios previously told fans that the beloved roguelike would get ports.
Darkest Dungeon 2 received generally favorable reviews after leaving early access in May 2023, with critics and gamers alike praising its enhanced visual presentation, as well as its adherence to the difficult, oftentimes cruel gameplay its predecessor was known for. In a past roadmap, Red Hook Studios made it clear that it wanted to bring this experience to consoles following the full launch of the title on Steam and the Epic Games Store. The developer has been quiet about the progress of these console versions, but recently highlighted government records can now at least indicate what systems will receive a port.
A listing on the website of Brazil's National Press showed that age ratings have been given to PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S versions of Darkest Dungeon 2, Gematsu reported. Specifically, the Unity engine-based title's console ports were not recommended for minors under the age of 14 due to their depictions of drugs and violence. In comparison, the ESRB gave Darkest Dungeon 2 a similar Teen rating, which is common among popular and critically acclaimed RPGs with mature themes.
The Brazilian National Press' listing did not mention a release date for the console versions of Darkest Dungeon 2. It took Red Hook Studios half a year to port the original Darkest Dungeon to the PS4, while the studio spent around two years to bring the game over to the Switch and Xbox One. If the development cycle for the console launch of Darkest Dungeon 2 is any similar, then it is possible for the title to join the list of games that will be released in 2024 on PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox.
However, it is clear that Red Hook Studios has been working on other things since the PC launch of Darkest Dungeon 2, as the company released the Binding Blade expansion last December. The paid DLC for Darkest Dungeon 2 brought back the Crusader, one of the many heroes from the first Darkest Dungeon who did not ship with the sequel at launch.
Aside from bringing back the Crusader in Darkest Dungeon 2, The Binding Blade also marked the series debut of the Duelist hero. Red Hook Studios' most recent major update for Darkest Dungeon 2 focused on hero rebalances, fixes, and tweaks, but the developer also said it was excited to surprise fans with what it had in store for 2024.
Darkest Dungeon 2 is a roguelike from Red Hook Studios that was released in early access in 2021. It's fully launching in 2023, so fans can dig even deeper into the RPG.
