The Moore Threads MTT S80 GPU which is designed for the Chinese domestic market is now able to run Unreal Engine 5.
For those unaware of Moore Threads, they were one of the first companies in China to provide in-house and high-end GPUs to consumers in the country. Moore Threads unveiled the MTT S80 and its cut-down brother, the MTT S70, which were the first mainstream GPUs to support PCIe 5.0 x16 protocol. While supporting newer technologies is a great start for the company, don't get deceived by the adoption of the standard, since in terms of performance, the GPU couldn't even beat the outdated GTX 1050 Ti while sipping in much higher power.
The main area where the Moore Threads MTT S80 & S70 GPUs significantly lagged was the lack of support for DX12 and even some DX11 titles. The company's drivers are severely outdated, which was the driving force behind the "unexpected" benchmarks of the MTT S80.
However, today's development reveals that Moore Threads is indeed planning on focusing on the "professional" side of the industry, with reports suggesting that the GPU can successfully render out content in Unreal Engine 5 and its various features such as LUMEN & Nanite.
We haven't obtained official benchmarks of the rendering times and the quality output, but rendering content on its own is a big achievement for the Moore Threads MTT GPUs. It is said that Moore Threads is also working towards making its products compatible with the DX12 environment, using driver updates along with bringing support for various tools onboard.
You know what they say, slow and steady wins the race, but will this be the case here for Moore Threads? While the "in-house" solutions have indeed gained traction in local media due to the "patriotic" factor, the GPUs in no way match with existing offerings in the market, and they even can't surpass outdated generations.
This has mainly to do with the lack of driver support and outdated software elements integrated, which has resulted in such disappointing performance. However, we do expect things to change in the future, given that the company is moving towards working on its existing GPUs.
