The console reportedly skyrocketed in price over a two-day stretch earlier in the month, causing the original Xbox console to jump from a $5000 valuation to its over $10000 finishing price. The auction also confirmed that the Hello Kitty Xbox is not currently functioning, though it was claimed to be «repairable» within the listing.
A major reason for the high price tag earned by the Hello Kitty Xbox auction comes with the significant scarcity of the console. The Hello Kitty Xbox was originally released as an exclusive giveaway from a specific retailer in Singapore, with only 550 of the themed consoles ever produced. The exclusive piece of Hello Kitty merchandise was reportedly given away with the purchase of a TV from the retailer during the promotion and was never re-released.
