The original Blasphemous was one of many games that found crowdfunding success on Kickstarter, and the developers at The Game Kitchen would find greater acclaim upon release. Focusing on a sprawling dark pilgrimage through an unsettling world inspired by Spanish folklore and the iconography of Roman Catholicism, Blasphemous is a richly detailed 2D fantasy action-platformer that took some cues from Dark Souls and the Metroidvania genre.

Though Blasphemous II is a pretty tough game in terms of tracking down all of its secrets and exploring its massive settings, probably the most difficult aspect of the game remains the often punishing combat. Still, there are plenty of collectibles strewn throughout the game that allow you to augment your experience and change the way that you approach battle.

One of the biggest ways that Blasphemous II changes things up from its predecessor is with the three weapons that it allows you to choose from at the start of the game. Though you can eventually get all three, and all three must be utilized at the very least for traversal, the way that the game staggers them out allows you to experiment with all three until you’re comfortable with each of your choices.

Blasphemous 2 is packed with interesting sidequests, but one of the most notable is the saga of Trifón and Cástula, the two sinister siblings found casually eating their dinner in the heart of the monster-infested Palace of the Embroideries. The souls-like metroidvania world of Blasphemous 2 dropped this week and it's already doing pretty dang well, with a peak player count of nearly 10,000 tripling the first game's top pop number. Blasphemous got a lot of praise for its twisted, dark-fantasy adaptation of the strange and fascinating world of Spanish Catholicism, with developers The Game Kitchen based as they are in Seville, Spain.

Developer The Game Kitchen and publisher Team17 have announced that Blasphemous 2 is out now on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. The launch of the game is being celebrated with the release of a new trailer, which you can check out below.

Due to release in just over a week on PS5, Blasphemous 2 appears to be a pretty straightforward sequel to the already fantastic Blasphemous — and we're perfectly okay with that. The 2D action adventure just got 16 minutes of raw gameplay footage (thanks IGN), and it looks damn good.
