Two months and almost $1.4 billion later, it's safe to say the Barbie movie has been a huge success at the box office. Such a big success that not only has it managed to surpass the worldwide box office of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but it is currently the highest-grossing movie of 2023. With actor and writer strikes in full effect and a limited release slate between now and the end of the year, it seems highly unlikely anything is going to come along and dethrone it.
Although its lead over the Mario movie is a slim one, both movies won't be taking much more at the cinema moving forward. Especially now Barbie is available to rent and buy from the comfort of your own home. That's right, you can now dress in pink and enjoy the biggest movie of the year right on your couch. The 4K UHD version of the film is available through Amazon, either to rent for $25, or you can own a digital copy outright for an additional $5.

Yes, $25 is a lot just to rent a movie, but the goal here is obviously for anyone who wants to watch Barbie to see the prices and think, "Well I may as well pay another $5, then I can just have it and watch it whenever I like." Usually, I'd argue that whenever that happens, you rarely end up watching the movie more than once or twice anyway. However, I'll likely pay the extra just so I can leave I'm Just Ken cued up at all times, allowing me to hit play at a moment's notice and not only hear the song but follow along with the terrific choreography.
The motion picture based on one of the most famous dolls of all time, Margot Robbie plays the role of Barbie with Ryan Gosling as Ken. Barbie and Ken find themselves in the real world, leading to their own reality getting turned upside down as a result.
Even though Barbie dolls have been around for decades, their popularity never really fading, the doll's first live-action movie has really thrown the toy back into the spotlight. Not only for older fans who played with Barbie and Ken dolls years ago, but opening the door to an entire new generation of potential Barbie fans. A number of new toys based on the character designs from the movie have been released over the summer, including a doll modeled after the film's Weird Barbie, and a Ken doll wearing his faux fur coat.
Mattel appears to have taken the wrong kind of Kenergy from the success of the Barbie movie. Rather than realizing it's the move itself and the messages it conveys that led to its massive success, the company has assumed films based on any of its IP and toys will make for equally great motion pictures. Projects centered around Polly Pocket, UNO, and Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots are also on the Mattel slate and no, I'm not joking.
