Void Stranger, out now, looks like a wonderful Game Boy nightmare

I don't have any firsthand insight to share on Void Stranger, which surprise-released on Friday, but when I read words like "forgotten labyrinth" and "traps that defy reason", I find myself reaching for my pen and inkwell, and when I encounter visuals that remind of the nastier Zelda dungeons on Game Boy, I start vibrating gently in my chair, and when I see monochrome anime story scenes set to howling guitar and fuzzy chip tunes - well, here we are.

Looks like dogs may be extinct in Starfield

According to Bethesda, a lot is going to happen between now and 2330, when Starfield is set. Most obviously, if we follow the timeline setout by the developer, humans will be able to gallivant around in space and planet hop as casually as popping across The Channel for a quick visit to France. In fact, possibly even more casually than that.

Nope, not a bug: Starfield's city maps just look like that

My mom recently showed me that you can pick a point on Pikmin 4's map and then press a button to return to the game with your character looking in that direction—a delightfully convenient feature. Nintendo really has a knack for designing maps. Bethesda, however… well, we all have our strengths and weaknesses, don't we?

A live-action Pokémon show premieres this fall — but it won’t look like the games at all

The world of Pokémon media is expanding. A new, live-action Pokémon drama premiering this fall will focus on the impact of the game on a former fan’s life — not on the Pokémon themselves. The show will air in October in Japan, according to a tweet from Japanese TV company Tokyo TV, translated by Pokémon website Serebii.

Following a trademark dispute with a calendar, beleaguered zombie survival game The Day Before looks like it's getting a new name, but this one might already be in use too

Things have not gone very well for The Day Before, the once-second-most-wishlisted game on Steam. After two years of weird delays and a near-complete dearth of gameplay footage, the whole thing was muscled off Steam (and the rest of the internet) by a copyright dispute with the maker of a calendar app called TheDayBefore. Developer Fntastic vowed that a triumphant return was in the offing, and despite a certain air of sketchiness to the whole thing, it looks like it might actually happen—under a different name.

This is what Starfield could look like in Unreal Engine 5

Even though Starfield isn’t out yet, there’s been so much content and sneak previews for the game that some people are trying to piece it together ahead of schedule. For example, one person has decided to recreate an outpost styled after the upcoming sci-fi RPG in something other than Bethesda’s in-house engine.

Crimson Desert's open-world action looks like the perfect fusion of Assassin's Creed and The Witcher in this show-stealing trailer

I wasn't expecting the sudden return of Crimson Desert to steal the show at Gamescom Opening Night Live, but this explosive new trailer showing off a frankly astounding amount of gameplay variety was extremely impressive.

Crimson Desert in action looks like a sort of janky Assassin's Creedlike where you explode stuff a lot

First announced three years ago, medieval-ish low fantasy-ish action adventureCrimson Desert made an appearance at Opening Night Live for Gamescom tonight, and boy do you have a horse in it. Also you can explode things with what looks like comical ease. Crimson Desert's older sibling is Black Desert Online, that MMO that has a really pretty character creator, and the big daddy dev Pearl Abyss say that Crimson Desert is still a work in progress but, hooooo, they're showing off that horse, alright.

I can't get over this "single-player MMO" that looks like Runescape with "simulated players"

Erenshor is an upcoming MMO inspired by the classics of the late '90s and early 2000s - specifically Runescape if you're judging by the art style - but there's a massive differentiator: it's single-player and thus isn't actually an MMO at all. In place of real human players, Erenshor instead has "persistent simulated players" that will "get to know you," invite you to raids, and journey right alongside you just like the real thing.
