AMD has secured a big win in terms of market share in Q3 2023 with its EPYC & Ryzen CPUs as revealed in the latest statistics by Mercury Research.
The AMD Ryzen & EPYC CPUs have once again started to gain popularity with the recent launches which include the EPYC 9004/8004 series & the Ryzen 7000 mobile lineup which includes a diverse portfolio of chips for customers to select from. As such, the company has now gained market share in both segments which is a win over their adversaries in the blue team.
Before diving into the per-segment market share, it should be reported that the AMD x86 share now sits at 19.4% (volume) and 16.9% (revenue) which is an increase from 17.3% (volume) & 14.1% (revenue) during the previous quarter and 15.0% (volume) & 12.2% (revenue) during last year (Q3 2022).
Starting with the AMD EPYC CPUs for servers, AMD saw a 5.8-point share increase versus last year and a 4.7-point share increase versus the previous quarter. This marks one step closer for AMD to achieve a 40% sever market share by the end of 2024. The company's newest 4th Gen EPYC lineup sits very strong amongst HPC and Data Center customers. The company also extended its 3rd Gen EPYC CPUs with increased support, and warranties and added new SKUs to drive even more share in the mainstream data center markets.
The mobile segment is the second biggest share gainer for AMD with a 3.8 point share increase versus the previous year and 2.9 point share increase over the previous quarter. This is thanks to the latest Ryzen 7000 and increased Ryzen 6000 volume. AMD's supply of Ryzen 7000 CPUs is still bottlenecked so the only thing stopping them from gaining a larger share is the magnitude of the overall supply which they can offer to their customers. The Phoenix and Dragon Range CPUs are very strong offerings. Phoenix essentially has Ryzen AI which targets Intel's upcoming Meteor Lake CPUs which are also envisioned as an "AIPC" product.
Lastly, there's the desktop side of things which saw a 0.5 point market share increase versus the previous year and a slight decline of -0.2 points versus the previous quarter. AMD's Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs recently surpassed Intel in South Korea and the same is the case in several other markets. Reduced prices for CPUs in the upcoming deals season and falling prices of hardware components such as AM5 motherboards, DDR5 memory, and SSDs are definitely going to attract customers and DIY builders in the coming months.
AMD seems to be doing really great across all segments, especially EPYC and Ryzen mobile. The desktop side is also expected to gain market share and is already seeing better revenue share in the current quarter so we can expect better results to follow in the fourth quarter of 2023.
